Xerox did sue Apple. Never got very far.

PARC was heavily funded by DARPA, NASA, and other tax-payer funded agencies. Therefore we should all sue Apple for our share.

There's no doubt that Apple has been a very innovative company. iTouchs are still the best portable music devices. iPads pretty much rule the tablet market. iPhones are very good devices (I'm a new 4S user and love it, having used Android), even though they lack some useful features of the top Androids. And Mac's are great computers, just absurdly pricey. After a month on an iPhone I'd love a Mac laptop.

The cheapest Mac, for a 4gig, 2.5+ ghz, 500+ gig HD seems to be around $1750 for a MacBook Pro

https://www.google.com/search?oq=pri...aptop+Computer

As opposed to a throw-away HP, 2.7ghz, 4gig RAM, 650GIG HD, 15.4 screen @ $330 at Staples.

http://www.staples.com/HP-g6-2123-us...product_932008

So I can buy roughly 5 HP's for the price of a Mac. There's got to be a lot of good in an Apple to make me want to plunk down that kind of money and quite frankly there's nothing about a Mac's that make it worth that kind of price difference.

And of course you conveniently leave out the graphics card and CPU out of it. (and no, two CPUs that are both 2.7ghz are not always equal)

And I was running multitasking on my original IBM PC using Desqview long before Apple had anything but a rudimentary paint program.

I never understood why Xerox didn't sue Apple and end up owning them. Apple would certainly have sued if they thought anybody took something from them. The reason that we don't have Apple clones on the market right now is because Apple was so litigation-happy. Companies like AMI were responsible for the explosion of PC clones back in the old days. I heard a story about the president of AMI talking with John Sculley and asking how he would view Apple clones on the market, Sculley promised immediate lawsuits.

You have to be careful when looking at the cheapest PC's from the mass marketers, sometimes they cut corners and will only give you 1GB of ram or something like that. Certainly they will give you a case and keyboard that is about as cheap as they can find, but other than the memory issue the machines will be at least run pretty well. I have a Dell Latitude (business class machine) that is feel and hardwire-wise the equivalent of a MBP and at 2/3 the price when I bought it. I also have a lower priced small and light Toshiba that I use for travel. There is a big difference in the feel of the 2 machines since the Toshiba was half the price of the Dell but the Toshiba still runs fine. I guess my point is that you can buy really cheap hardware for 20% the price of the Apple, or better hardware for 40% the cost of the Apple, or hardware equivalent to the Apple for maybe 70% of its cost. I wouldn't recommend the 20% machine unless that is all that you can afford.

I will say that the unibody MacBook Pro is pretty durable. I inadvertently tossed my wife's MBP from standing height (slipped right out of my hands) last night. It collected a few beige scratches from the HVAC register it landed on, but those will actually rub right out. It booted up just fine. I am pretty sure my Acer netbook and Dell at work would not have survived without some plastic case crackage.

^try running a hakintosh-ed OS X on it. you might find a happy medium.

I understand why people hate apple and their fanbois. I know of people with MBPs who don't really know how to use them, for example: I have some colleagues who were amazed at Expose when I showed it to them on their Macs.... the problem is they've owned their macs for over a year.

They do love to show their macs off in public though.

I was trying to teach my elderly parents how to use computers for about 20 years... and about a decade ago I just gave them an old Powerbook and within a month they finally figured out how to use it completely all by themselves.

I think I might be just the opposite- I would like to have a MBP and run Win7 exclusively on it. I have a Mac with "white spotted kitty" OS and I much prefer Win7 to it.

So my Dad comes over with a Kindle Fire last night. I play with it for ten minutes. I'm used to iPhones and iPads. This Kindle was utter fail on several levels in comparison. Clunky/inelegant hardware, touch screen that refused to respond half the time, balky software that took a long time to launch and run.

You wonder why Apple does so well? If that's the competition, don't wonder so hard.

The iPad mini will crush the Kindle, even if it's $50 more.

I just got a phone with a screen that actually works pretty well in the rain. Droid Pro. Best thing ever! Still getting used to the Crackberry style keyboard, though.

My other phones have been rendered useless by barely damp fingers or breathing on them on a cold day but this one works in pretty significant downpours.

One week, if the rumors are true. It'll be interesting to see how it stacks up to the Nexus 7.

The only thing they said in that video that was remotely accurate was that OS 9 was a friggin disaster. But everything else completely misses the point. Apple never claimed they invented this stuff, but when you come up with an iPod, and it's a cool new product, yes, you did essentially invent a new superior product, even if it is derivative.

Those guys can't see past their soldering irons.

I need a new 27" iMac, a new 13" laptop and an iPad mini by year's end.

One fringe benefit of being self employed is that all this Apple crap becomes tax deductions. Hey, wtf, they screw you in every other way, so that's an offsetting factor.

I use my Hackintosh for editing photos. Small media stuff in the house is usually consumed via iPad.

Everything else is done on my Chromebook. I have a happy computing household.

I'm still supremely amused by the trouble people have plugging usb stuff and headphones into iMacs at the school. Always feeling for slots in the monitor edge, then gasping in frustration as they turn the monitor part way around, crane their neck and reach back there with cables. At least the computer graphics lab is nice enough to supply real mieces. Mac lab in the library has the dreaded Mighty Mouse. Seems like the tickly nubbin on all of them only scrolls one way. Annoying. Even more annoying than thr new OS kitty default scroll wheel going backwards. "Natural" my ass!
