Here's a time-tested solution from my great-grandmother.

When you go to the party, look around. Find that person who looks even more lost and lonely than you are. Help them out. She told this to her daughter and it worked.

Lol. You guys are funny. I worried about talking to people while I was about 10 years old.
While I was single all I did was went to the parties alone so I can meet people. Well...to meet girls anyways
Just walk in to the room and start saying hi to people and you'd be amazed to find out that people are, one...not monsters. Two...they have things in commen with you and three, most of them are actually pretty pleasant to talk to.

Don't be hello handicapped.

This is actually how I met by best friend of 25 years. I had to go to some school thing and looked for someone who was more miserable than I was.

If that doesn't work, talk to other people about THEM... ask uncomfortable questions, look for tattoos! Tats are the best.

"Nice ink! Can I see it!?....sweet!"
"How did you pick that?"
"What else do you have?
"No way, show me!"
"Come on,,,show me"

You'll then get a show of some of the craziest tats you've ever seen... in places you never thought were decent to reveal in public.

Remember: Be genuine when commenting... always praise. Ask the pain question. Ask what they are getting next.

Always assume they have more than one. Always assume they are getting something next. Always assume they should be perfectly willing to show you their tats.

I don't have any... so my only story with them is being totally indecisive on what to get and where.

You'll see some awesome stuff.

And you'll have a new story of what someone showed you and challenge the next person to show more.

The event is not until Saturday. I'm going alone, I think I need to start exposing myself to these types of environments to stop being so shy. When I bring a friend they usually end up doing all the talking and make a new friend

The first thing is if you do try to engage anyone in conversation, don't over do it. Working your way into an existing conversation is easier as you don't have to provide the material and there are others involved to prevent awkward silences. Find something outside of the main entertainment/focus/etc of the gathering to talk about. If there is something on a tv that has garnered the attention of a small group, walk over, figure out what's going on, and ask a few questions. Food tables are good, but talk about food. Don't walk up and talk about whatever the event is; it's easier to make a conversation seem more casual when it's about something other than the main focus. Otherwise, the conversation seems forced.

"how do you know (host's name here)" can also start a conversation if you have an interesting story about them or know them well.

It should really boil down to whether or not you ( and only you, trying to ignore certain societal expectations ) are happy with the way you are. There's absolutely nothing whatsoever wrong with being someone who prefers to mind your own business and contemplate things from off in the corner. Some people feel energized by social interactions. Some people find them draining. Either way is a perfectly legitimate response.

Offer to help out with something, and then wait for some of the extroverts who need to someone to talk at come over. You'll be wishing for peace and quiet in no time.

RaleighSport's party primer.
1: Drink lots, and lots and lots of booze before party.
2: Stagger to party.
3: Shout loudly to announce your arrival.
4: If anyone yells at you for step 3, yell even more loudly at them.
5: Locate the prettiest girl in the room with a date, hit on her.
6: When her date comes to start trouble, hit on him.
7: When everyone's confused, drink more.

Sure fire way to have a good time.

bring a flask, take a half an x, or a whole ativan. don't hit the pipe, you might become too paranoid. smile, smell nice. wear great shoes. it's worked for me.

i'm in seattle now where plenty of people, pretty girls even, are standoffish. when i lived in houston, i would go to shows all the time alone. find a place by the bar and talk to the bartender until someone else chimes in on the conversation. problem solved until the band starts playing.

What does everyong have in common? Do you and all the others work at the same place, have a common interest (like bicycles )? That's a good way to get a conversation started.

I've had two sales jobs in my life, so striking up a conversation with strangers (or getting rejected by 'em) isn't a problem with me.
