Do you know anyone there? Find that person, or persons and ask them to introduce you to anyone you know. Work related? Fun related? How are you connected to the group?

If there are name tags, maybe write a little something on yours to pique their interest. At a recovery group I attend, I will often write a bible verse under my name. If someone asks me why Joel 2:25, I have an instant ice breaker.

Yes. I stand in the corner and don't talk to anyone. At a work related party a couple years ago I looked so pathetic that the director sent someone over to chat with me and sit next to me at the dinner.

No, I don't know anyone at the event. Fun related! There will be raffle tickets and beer but I'm not going to drink.

I'm a shy adult

Networking unless I'm with someone to introduce me around a bit is my worst nightmare. I'd rather show up late to work naked than have to do that very long. I look at the people who can fit right in with much jealousy.

I was shy when I was a lot younger. I dreaded social events that were filled with strangers.

I think when I started to lie for recreation it became a lot more fun.

"What line of work are you in?" I'm asked.

"Well since I inherited I mainly clip coupons." This said while I stand there in ratty clothes and a really bad haircut.

"Oh, really? That's fascinating!" and they would wander off wondering if I meant bonds or CVS coupons.

"What line of work are you in?" I'm asked.

"Body double in porn flics."

"Oh, Really! That must be interesting!"

"Oh it's a lot of wait and hurry up."

Ask the host, organizer if you can help out. Sell raffle tickets, etc. Gives you something to do and people are coming to you for something they want.

I became a software engineer so that people would not be surprised at my social awkwardness. ;-)

++100. The snack table is always a great place to help. Read the local throwaway/arts paper before you go and you'll be up to date on what's happening, read the weather prediction for the next week and you'll have something to talk about. And of course, talk about the food and how nice the party is. Don't be afraid, don't have your expectations high and you'll do fine.

I don't believe there is anything wrong with standing on your own at a party and not talking to people. It depends how you feel on the day. It horrifies me to think others could judge me to have a psychological problem just because I don't feel like mixing in.

If you feel like going to a party - go there. And if you get there and prefer to sit in a corner, so be it. Sometimes you meet nicer people by sitting alone.

As a lifelong introvert, I can state with a high degree of assurance that many extroverts are absolutely convinced that people who don't want to engage with everyone in the room do indeed have a psychological problem. If I hear "You're so quiet, what's the matter?" one more time...

Hah! I married a software engineer. A gorgeous, tall, blonde, software engineer who rides bikes. I'm a lucky guy.

We're both socially awkward, though. We go to parties together so we don't have to leave alone.

If it's work related, don't worry about it. No one will remember it unless it ends with you under a lampshade or naked. If it's not work related, don't go if you don't know anyone or don't want to.

Sometimes, but it often isn't very fun. For me it is much better to at least know one other person.
