Safe to use Java?

I know there was all that jazz going around last month or so about Java being vulnerable... but is it safe now? I found a website that allows you to play classic old PC/DOS/NES, etc games, but it requires Java to be running. So what say ye internet masters? Can I enable it just while playing the games and be safe?

I never disabled mine, and it downloaded an update just a couple of days ago so I assumed the new update probably contained a fix. I don't know for sure though.

Safe is relative.

Java isn't any more secure than it was. There are always reports of vulnerabilities.

I would leave Java disabled unless you're on a website that requires it.

The last time I actually needed Java was at my last employer where a vendors web interface was written entirely in Java. Java has jumped the shark. Don't waste time enabling it unless you really need it.

Java is currently maintained by Oracle. 'Nuff said.

I use the developer version of Java, to avoid the ads and bloatware, and I use NoScript with Firefox to keep it disabled except for a few sites I trust that have to have it to work properly.

Per our IT department:

Java 6 upgrade 39 is probably the best.

Java 7 has holes not in 6.

All still have risks.

Official company line is still do not use. Individuals who have asked have been told they can reenable and use if they need it, but to be sure to have the latest patches.

This hasn't necessarily been shown. The fact they release updates to 6 and 7 at the same time implies to me that they are patching the same security vulnerabilities.

Furthermore, Oracle is ending public updates for Java 6 at the end of the month. https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/eol-135779.html

I heard the latest version of Java fixes the security issues. Chrome asks me if I want to run Java for each website and it hasn't run in ages (except for the Java version check.)
