I don't mean what was your first car, but what car were you driving when you first took your driver's test and passed?
For me, it was my step-brother's '62 Fairlane, just about exactly like this. For some reason, Dad wouldn't let me use his BMW 1600.

Actually didn't have to take the test... at the time IL was exempting kids from it who took drivers education and got a B plus or better on 2 of the three course sections. (Classroom, simulation, and on the road.) Don't know if that's common.

1972 Pontiac Laurentian. My father figured if I could parallel park a 'boat' on my driver's test, I could drive anything/anywhere LOL.

1984 Chevy Caprice Classic, which was my family's main car at the time. For years I either drove that or my dad's rusty '77 Chevy pickup. The pickup was more embarrassing to be seen in, but it was more fun to drive.

The first one was a 1970 Chevy Impala.
Later for my commercial license a Freightliner Century Class with 10 forward gears and a jake brake pulling an empty flatbed.

I think a '72 Buick Skylark.
Dad sold cars, so we had a steady stream of different cars in our family. I was given my first car, with the caveat that I had to maintain the insurance. Since this was an older used car... I paid for the value of the car in insurance costs pretty quickly. My first car was a '62 Buick LeSabre in '72. I took up regular cycling in '73 with the gas crisis. By '78 I was car free.

My mother's '69 Pontiac Catalina 4-door -- talk about a BOAT!
It was May, 1975. When we arrived at the License Branch and went in, we only waited a short time before the tester came out. We headed out to the car. . . to discover another car had all but blocked us in from behind! Well, no choice, let's go and get on with the test.
With a series of short zigs and zags out of the parking space, I started off; we drove less than a mile, the tester quietly directing. We ended up back at the Branch, where it was easy to park a little further away. The tester told me to just take the bigger space.
After being told that I PASSED, the tester told my mother that I had virtually passed the test before the first corner, since HE didn't believe he could have gotten the car out of that parking spot.

1968 Buick Skylark Specail Delux station wagon, my parents had recently bought it from my great aunt. It was also my first car. I had to take the test twice since the car was too big to park in the unrealistic parallel parking set up. I had no problems in the little driver's Ed car.

Something like Dr. Kevorkian's bus.

I had always imagined the conversation at VW went something like this:
"Hey, we have this little economy car that can barely propel itself...let's put the same motor in a bus! People will be cursing it for generations to get out of the way..."

^^^Good Gawd! The original multi-person death trap.
It's like the Beetle wasn't deadly enough.
"How can ve kill even more peeple? Jah, we build bigger box. Maybe add der rollover feature too, jah! Make brakes no good, make steering, how you say, fakakta?"

My cousins brand new 1988 Toyota, I forget which one but do remember it was one of their "luxury" models. I passed the test on my first try! That sick crème 1976 Chevy Camaro I had waiting for me at home made me study very hard the night before!
