batting 50-50 on Apple IOS devices

I have an iphone4, and an ipad2, both on their original OS's. I have never connected them to a computer because I have an older ipod with lots of music loaded on itunes and I don't want to sync the music to the other devices. Plus they worked fine on their original OS's. Well it seems everything I want to load on the ipad requires a newer OS so I reluctantly had to give in and try to upgrade it. I used my laptop for this, no music on it, and installed the latest itunes. I spent about 3 hours working with the phone and never got it fully working. I installed the new OS but it would not restore its backup to the phone, so the phone is completely blank just like it came out of the box. I lost my contacts, notes, everything. I did hours of internet searching and didn't find any suggestions that actually worked. I actually installed itunes on a second laptop, copied the backup to it and tried restoring from it, with no success. I finally gave up on the phone and went to the ipad. It upgraded and restored just fine first time, no problems.

In my internet searching I found an article written by a tech writer where he tried upgrading about 10 different devices to IOS7. He said he had 50% success rate, so I'm doing about the same as the experts.

And BTW I find that IOS7 is very cartoonish-looking compared to the previous IOS versions. I am almost embarrassed to use it.

to be fair, both android and iOS have their quirks when upgrading to a newer version.

I am so sick and tired of my SGS3 still being on 4.3 that I have now switched over to N4 that runs 4.4.2

I went from Windows phones to iphones specifically because Samsung tampered with the OS too much before they released the product, then never offered an upgrade. I've stayed away from Android phones for the same reason. With iphones you can upgrade the OS, or at least upgrade it a little bit. Maybe the problem is that they want you to buy a new phone every 2 years and I didn't do that.

I understand your frustration. Partly it's the "Apple Way" that is just different to a guy (like myself) that has used Windows for 18 years and possibly that's what you are experiencing.

In general though:

1) You can back up any number of devices to a single iTunes account without having the music (or anything else) transferred that you don't want transferred.. iTunes allows you to turn off the automatic music/photo/app/video sync function. When you first connect the device you are given the option of sync'ing all and you can decline as well as just turning off auto-sync everything in the Device - Summary - Options section. I have my iPad backed up but it does not have any music or video's on it.

2) I would bet the backup is "somewhere", if it indeed did one. If I recall, iTunes will automatically backup the device when doing an update, thus I'd be surprised that's it's gone.

3) As compared to updating a Windows machine, as well as the horrible Samsung/Android Kies experience, I have done numerous updates to 2 iPhone's as well as an iPad Mini and have found the Apple experience to be straightforward and painless.

In the past 2 days I've connected 3 IOS devices to my fancy Dell business class laptop and one of the IOS devices also to my Toshiba laptop. None of these 4 times was I asked if I wanted to sync or not, it automatically began the sync. I installed itunes fresh on both laptops so there was no music or anything else in itunes.

I do have a backup and I can extract photos and a few other things from the backup, but I can't get itunes to restore the backup to the iphone. I tried the iphone4 on the Dell and the Toshiba both, many times, and got error messages every time. It goes through all of the backup steps then at the very end it says "could not restore ___ because of an error". I did a lot of google searching and found that this is a common error message but it usually gives an error number with it and in some cases the error number tells what is causing the error.

I figured I had had the iphone4 for 3.5 years so I was due an upgrade even though the iphone4 still worked fine, so today I went to the actual ATT world headquarters building and picked up a new iphone 5s. I took it home, connected it to the computer, told it to restore, and got the exact same result. It went through the 5 minute restore and then after all that it gave me the exact same error message.

Now I've gotten this error message on 2 different phones each on multiple laptop computers, multiple times each.
