Covering Tommy James & the Shondells

other obscure covers
Golden Earring's singer

The Queers original singer

Dream Syndicate singer

so what does dragging the line mean anyway ?

"Draggin' the Line" has been described as a "lazy psychedelic shuffle whose hypnotic feel perfectly expressed its title."[8]Asked about the meaning of the title in a 2009 interview, Tommy James said: ""Draggin' the Line" just meant working every day. Nothing really very mysterious about it."[9] However, it has been falsely speculated that the song's title and lyrics refer to cocaine use,[10] citing the title, the lyrics, Tommy James' documented drug use,[11][12] and because another Tommy James and The Shondells song, Crystal Blue Persuasion, has been previously associated with the use of speed,[10] the song having been described in 1979 by noted music critic Dave Marsh as "a transparent allegory about James' involvement with amphetamines. In addition, it has been widely accepted that the song could more specifically refer to the tedious job of setting up power lines back in the early 50's and 60's. This view has gained a large amount of support, especially since the lyrics are commonly interchanged with 'Checkin the line''"[13]

A couple of the new music's wave of "not afraid to speak their mind" psycho-girls doing covers Torrid Tuesdays, songstresses with the mostest...

I was really excited to see K Flay covering Metric, my fav band. One of their many quirky songs that was never a hit

Meg Myers covering Kate Bush

...couldn't really find anything I liked from Tove Lo, so I'll sub this cool Sublime cover from Lana Del Rey

This cover came up in conversation this past week on one of the threads, a really good cover of Sound of Silence by Disturbed that seemed to have a doomsday feel to the video more so than the S&G original.

The last time I posted it was also after a mass shooting, the Paris terrorist massacre in Nov '15 where 130 were killed. It seemed to fit then but now mass shootings often don't make the leading story of the day. Two for Tuesday Music

I just discoverd this guy. He's actually a great songwriter himself, who takes his time for it with only 3 albums since 2005.

I'm on the email list of "retired" Minnesota alt band Motion City Soundtrack, one of the great underappreciated bands who should have had more commercial success in a perfect world. Received this yesterday on email - there was no wording, just the video with the title 12.31.19 - I'm hoping it means they're starting back....and this MCS song (not a cover) fits the date.

You can tell a lot about a band by what they choose to cover
The Weakerthans

another Metric cover

...& I hear these guys were pretty good:

A tragedy we as cyclists can relate to, a young AZ musician killed before her time by a drunken driver. Who knows how far Lindsey Earl could have gone?

Helter Skelter part II - New Tarantino Movie with Impressive Ensemble Cast

I saw a preview last night of the new Tarantino movie premiering July 26th with the Manson murders as a backdrop, but not the focus of the movie. DiCaprio & Pitt as well as Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate, Dakota Fanning as Squeaky Fromme....looks interesting.

Helter Skelter covers p.2

With two significant earthquakes here in Southern California this past week, this seems like an appropriately titled song (and covers):

I didn't feel the one on July 4, but did feel the one on Friday evening July 5 - just a long rolling motion like you're in a small fishing boat on a choppy lake. The typically means you're not close to the epicenter; if I was it would be sharply defined, almost violent jolts. Ridgecrest is about a three hour/200 mile drive away.
