Sunday's Music Theme: Covers Only

Sunday is the only day of the week remaining without a music theme. There are so many interesting covers out there, that a covers only thread could support itself, so post your favorite covers.

I'll start with a controversial, but interesting one. A alt band out of Indiana called the Ataris covered The Boys of Summer by Don Henley. They completely updated the song by changing 2 words: The "Dead Head" sticker on a Cadillac became a "Black Flag" sticker. Black Flag was a LA punk band early in the genre. Evidently they must not have had Henley's full permission to cover the song because YouTube videos of the song have just in the last year or so been muted. I still hear the song on the radio though, so I'm not sure of the legal issues.

Blondie's cover of Jck Lee's 'Hanging on the Telephone'. FYI: Jack lee was a very prolific music wrier/erformer in the L.A. musicscene back in the late 1970s-early 1980s. Not much stage success himself, but lots of his tunes were hits for other bands.

Here's an obscure one from 1980. The Plimsouls doing a great cover of an Otis Redding tune. I dig the 'party vibe' background sounds in this recording. And I have a copy of the vinyl EP, too!:

I actually like the original better, but this turned me on to it.

Best cover, EVAR.

Honorable mentions:
- Dead Kennedy's covering Viva Las Vegas
- Social Distortion covering Ring of Fire
- Devo covering Satisfaction, also Are You Experienced.

Some good ones above, I love the cool drum cadence on Devo's Satisfaction - I was expecting Skidder to do Social D's Ring of Fire, I think he's a big fan of them.

Indirectly speaking of Johnny Cash, it's kind of neat that someone of his stature in the music industry covered Nine Inch Nails "Hurt".

That cover of Ironman was interesting.

For a cover to succeed it has to turn the original inside out like that or dominate it totally like Led Zepplin did with When the Levee Breaks.

I much prefer Bryan Ferry's rendition of Jealous Guy to Lennon's. Lake Street Dive covers McCartney's Let Me Roll It and makes the original insipid in comparison.

Al Green sang Take Me to the River first and It's Awesome but when Talking Heads and Bryan Ferry brought out covers of it almost simultaneously back in the 80's it was great. I think I like Ferry's the best...

Here's Ferry covering Amy Winehouse Back to Black:

"i'll keep it with mine."

and a +1 to the bryan ferry cover of lennon's "jealous guy." have usually enjoyed ferry's covers of others. another fave is bowie's version of "sorrow" off of the album pin-ups.
