July Photo Contest

Machka wrote :

`Congratulations to all the winners!!

And @macfred ... July is your contest. To start, choose the theme, and monitor…´

Theme for July is a little difficult to explain …

Show me your Heimat (home, homeland).
Heimat is a german word with no direct english equivalent - it is often expressed with terms as home or homeland.
People are bound to their Heimat by their birth and their childhood, their language,
their earliest experiences or acquired affinity.
Heimat as a trinity of descent, community and tradition, that highly affects a person's identity.
Heimat usually carries positive connotations.

The rules are simple:
-You must be the photographer
-One entry per month

I spent my teen years on the south coast of England. Also not a recent pick, but I will be on this beach again next month.

San Pasqual Valley, Escondido, CA. North County San Diego. I used to live in a neighborhood just off to the left of this picture. Awesome cycling out there. One of the few things I miss about California.

Nice entries so far - I will try a different one to explain my understanding of home.

I captured this photo of my daughter Mia a few weeks ago, during an evening walk along the property line.
This photo reminds me to when I was a young boy; leaning on our fence gate, dreaming of faraway places and alien lands - simultaneously I was thinking of home and I felt warm, protected and beloved. Now, I lived all over the world, but I never left home.

When I think of home by macfred64, on Flickr

Found a beautiful poem :

When I Think Of Home
*
When I think of 'home' I think of cherry pies
When I think of 'home' I think of mulberry trees
When I think of 'home' I think of butterflies
When I think of 'home' I think of bumble bees
*
When I think of 'home' I think of hummingbirds
When I think of 'home' I think of sun brewed tea
When I think of 'home' I think of morning walks
When I think of 'home' I think of Grandma and me
*
When I think of 'home' I think of hidden trails
When I think of 'home' I think of lullabies
When I think of 'home' I think of signs of spring
When I think of 'home' I think of pumpkin pies
*
When I think of 'home' I think of bedtime stories
When I think of 'home' I think of I think of honeysuckle
When I think of 'home' I think of roses blooming
When I think of 'home' I can't help but chuckle
*
Because when I think of 'home' I think Heaven
When I think of 'home' I think of all thats kind
When I think of 'home' I think of dancing
When I think of 'home' Grandma comes to mind
*
*

Hmm, this one will be difficult for me. I grew up in Middle Tennessee but I absolutely hate it there and it hasn't felt like "home" to me in a really, really long time. But I've only lived in my current town for a couple of years, so it doesn't exactly feel like home, either.

I don't really have a "homeland" because I move and travel so much. So ...

Home is where I lay my Hat

Taken last week on my Grandparent's (now Uncle's) farm in western Mass. We used to visit there every summer when we were kids.

If any of you photography experts have anything you'd like to add about choosing a camera/lens for shooting macro images for an effort I'm trying to get going for my lab, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

*edit* changed my mind. I think this is more in the spirit of heimat. My grandfather passed away a few weeks ago. I was reflecting on my child hood and I took a photo of the stairs I've looked down upon so many times over the years (so many memories). Many of those times, my grandfather would be at the bottom with a stern look (because I was likely misbehaving). I took this photo on the day that he passed away, the outfit that my grandmother picked out was hanging at the place that I so often saw him stand when I was just a child. Now I stare at an empty suit and contemplate how I could never fill it.

Nothing fancy, photo taken on my iphone. I have a folder containing about thirty pictures from that day as I walked around the house and tried to capture a moment in time. It's funny, as I go through those photos, I can smell the differences between the individual rooms and I am filled with emotion. Now I have a word to describe that, heimat.

Speaking of German... my family name is Lieb, Love.

As noted in some of the prior entries, pictures tell a story reflecting back on their Heimat. I am a native Floridian with one line dating back to arriving in Florida in the 1750's. While I still live in Florida, just not in Jacksonville. so almost any photo within the State would do. Actually, I now live closer to New Smyrna where my original descendants arrived.

The photo below obviously wasn't taken recently, nor did I take it. I did scan the original B&W and until I restored it didn't realize I was in the back of the truck. It is a special picture of my Heimat as my father died a few months later. So yes, it does tell a story.
