iPhone: Any really good reasons to wait for the iPhone 6?

I currently do not own an iPhone (nor a SmartPhone of any sort). I'm way overdue to get one. In fact, it would be especially handy if I got one before mid-September, because there's an industry conference I'm attending next month where it will be extremely important (if not mandatory) to have messaging, email, and GPS functions in a mobile device.

But apparently the iPhone 6 will not be out by then. Or if it is, it will be priced accordingly for a just-released Apple product.

Is there any really good reason not to just buy an iPhone 5S right now, rather than wait for the 6?

Thanks.

I'd never buy an iphone knowing the new model is coming out next month.

I still have a 3 that works fine as a back up smart phone. It won't run the latest software or apps but it still functions well. I sold my 4S when I switched to Android and the fellow that bought it has no plans to upgrade. I would think a 5S will be fine for the expected life of it. Like computers, as soon as you buy it, it is obsolete.

You may be able to get a better deal on the 5 as retailers are trying to move them in anticipation of a new model.

The announcement is supposed to September 9. Phones will most likely not be available that day. (They usually come out on a Friday.)
One problem with get a new phone with a new form factor is that cases are usually not available right away unless you get one from Apple. I am on the "s" cycle so when I get a new phone, everyone has had a year to get all the accessories out and I don't have to wait.
If didn't have a phone now, I might not wait. It seems like there are always a few bugs to work out with a new form factor. The 5s is a pretty good phone. I have no problems with mine and I will be able to upgrade to iOS 8 when it is available.

Where are you located, what cell carrier do you use?

The most significant difference rumored for the iPhone 6 generation is a larger screen. Rumor speak of sized from 5.5" to 6 inches. Some folks (I'm one) find larger screens more useful for some things. Others prefer smaller screens since it leads to smaller phones or better one handed operation (so they can use the phone while driving to text that they just about hit a bicyclist who came out of nowhere--I kid, kid).

If a larger screen seems like something that would have value for you and you want a Apple phone, wait. You could try out larger screens on non-Apple phones at a store if you don't know.

One way to handle your September trip if you want to wait for a larger screen iPhone would be to get an inexpensive non-contract phone to tide you over until later in the year. It's not an iPhone, but something like a Lumina 520 or 521 (available for example with an ATT Go Phone non-contract plan) is perfectly usable smaller smart phone sold outright for less than $100. There are other lower cost smart phones like that too, I mention the Lumina 52x only because I've used one and found it decent for a off contract phone. You could also look for a used phone at a lower price that can take a SIM card from a non-contract carrier plan for you September need.

Even if you don't want the 6, I'd still wait. They will drop the price on the 5S when the 6 comes out.

They will sometimes be dropping the prices on the 5S before the 6 release.

I got my 4S this way about a week before the 5 was released, when Target was clearing out. Sometimes the vendors dump before, as if they wait, everyone wants the new and improved and the vendors get stuck with old gear.

Keep an eye out at Target, Walmart, Best Buy (not as likely for as good a deal), sometimes Apple and the wireless carriers.

As to 5S vs. 6 ?. I haven't been following the buzz so have no clue if the 6 will have significant features the 5S doesn't. If not, the difference comes down to form factor. I like the size of a 4S and will move to the 5S in a few weeks when my 2 year contract is up as it's only a bit longer and not wider, which I like. I can trade in the 4S for about $75, then pick up a 5S for $100, so outside of accessories, it'll run me $25.

The 5S has 4G service and that's about all I really want that's different from my 4S (Verizon).

I would also not be getting a iPhone 6 for the size, as there are better (or as good) options in the Android world.

I'm not a fan of the iphone, but there are a lot of personal factors there. If you want a smaller sized smartphone, definitely the one to go with. If you've got bad eyes like me, galaxy all the way. I'd wait for the 6 to come out/ price to drop on the 5s... Steve B is right IIRC, they do drop the prices shortly after the announcement of the next model. It'll probably be free or $100 with a new contract or if you are due for an upgrade.

Target has been having sales on the 5c. But that is not a great deal. The 5c is more like a 5 with a plastic case. But I saw it for $29 which is hard to beat.

I agree, wait for as long as you can to see if you can get a deal on a 5s.

And the rumors of a larger screen are more like 4.7" not larger like 5.5".

Coworker was looking for a compact bluetooth printer not long ago. There were a few models available but none were compatible with the Apple IOS. They were all designed for Android.
