Ray Rice

What a fiasco. So many people from Roger Goodell to NFL Player's Union to Fox & Friends apparently are just idiots. So much to say but this is basically disgusting.

Wow, ?Fox & Friends? hosts joke about Ray Rice video: ?The message is, take the stairs?* - NY Daily News

Joking about a video of domestic violence (really an assault) is just wrong.

Goodell needs to resign. He blew it and needs to take responsibility for not acting sooner on this. The Ravens sat on this as well.

This reminds me of fights between children of different families, the kids have made up, but the parents are still mad as hell.

Granted, this man is a professional football player, he should be used to being pushed around on the field, and not resort to the actions that he did. To drag his fiance, at the time, out of the elevator like a sack of flour was also poor judgement on his part, been better to stay with her in the elevator, or at least attempt to carry her out.

How you figure? Rice was sanctioned earlier in the year by the Ravens for this incident, though they were unaware of its severity until the video surfaced.

Just how could they be unaware of the severity of this? The original video (as has been reported) still showed rice dragging her limp body out of the elevator. It was pretty freaking clear he had beat the hell out of her.

Are you saying that because Rice and his wife have 'made up' the incident should be dropped?

She was his fiance. They married after he punched her. What was she thinking?

Being an NFL player should be more than being a good athlete. Millions of kids aspire to be like them.

I'd say no.

BUT I'd also say the actions of the league and the Ravens are garbage.

What is says if screw up and we will kick you to the curb. Actually in light of the earlier light sanction it says that if you become a political problem we will gladly sacrifice you to save our butts.

The original sanction should have been considerably more. Actually the original sanction should have included mandatory anger management counseling. Very mandatory as in specific goals that had to be met before he could play again.

Honestly for this kind of thing I do not see 'no contact with the team' suspensions to be in order. No play, nothing that interferes with counseling, but not no contact with the team. Instead accountable to the team and guys ready to call him on any slip.

But that would be if the NFL actually cared about the players as opposed to their image.

I heard on ESPN radio that the NJ State Police was responsible for the investigation because it occurred in a casino. The league asked them for all video but it turns out that the SP is only responsible for the casino, not the hotel, so they didn't have it. They're pawning off responsibility for the video to the Atlantic City PD.

I'm certain the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office had the video from the start. I'm sure they would not have sent it to the NFL at the time since it was evidence in a criminal proceeding and continues to be evidence as long a he is on probabtion.
Does anyone know what the penalties/requirements were for Rice to be placed onto probation? Does he have to attend therapy, anger management counesling, or any other court ordered therapy? Did he pay a fine?

As far as the video is concerned, there is no NEW evidence. The man stated he punched the girl and knocked her out. All the video did was confirm. The NFL and the Ravens dropped the ball on this one (no pun intended).

What Ray Rice did is no more egregious today than when he was arrested.

Well said that being a nfl player, or any pro athlete imo, should be about more than athleticism. I know if I owned a team there would be morality clauses.

And seriously, he should have been booted the second the original tape surfaced. No excuse for that type of behavior.

The NFL is hugely popular and profitable. They act like many business concerns (although, they managed to get themselves named a nonprofit, but that’s another story) that don’t like bad press. When a big star gets in trouble they cautiously gage public opinion and downplay it as much as possible. They will only seem to react strongly when there is a popular outcry over it. Wasn’t this pretty much how it all went down with the M. Vick dog fight scandal? There’s a pattern here and it not that they just “dropped the ball” with R. Rice. They just got caught out by how much the public was outraged by their lack of response and some of the hypocrisy. One player gets suspended a year for smoking weed and another two games for punching his fiancée unconscious. It makes the NFL look a little disconnected from reality.

All pro sports leagues (and the Catholic Church) will try to sweep even the most egregious behavior under the rug for as long as possible. Drugs, doping, gambling, domestic abuse, DUI, weapons, etc. Only when faced with a public outcry do they take steps to curb, prevent, and enforce. And then it's only the minimum. I think that if they actually made a good faith effort to clean up their sport there wouldn't be enough people left to play it.

I hadn't seen the show... just the link you posted. But I don't think that was a joke. Serious GOOD advice. If you think the person your with may become violent when you're alone together.... get out of there.... leave them... don't be alone with them... take the stairs.... and don't look back.

At least with an elite road cyclist this kind of incident would never happen.

Not enough upper body strength to deliver a good left hook.

Yeah right "the message" to a woman being punched in the face by her fiancé and then dragged unconscious out of an elevator is to "take the stairs,"…….there have been so many stupid comments made on F&F's that I don’t see why people would expect something else.

Yes, absolutely. It's their business, and no one else's. What happened to privacy and boundaries?

My wife is of similar opinion, though I'm not entirely convinced a battered/abused woman would raise her hand against her tormentor until she snapped (if at all).
