IIRC, road signs are designed to be frangible, i.e. break easily, to minimize damage to the occupants of the car hitting the sign. Not sure how that translates to signs suspended well above traffic.

Yeah, I don't think that's applicable. There are guardrails as a rule to protect cars and trusses

I've seen plenty of highway signs on the sides of roads that are not behind a guardrail.

signs on the roadside, yes... those need to be break-away. But supports for the trusses that cross the entire highway, we are required to place guardrail around them.
