Favorite Windows 8 apps for tablets?

For some inexplicable reason, the family somehow ended up at the biggest Mall around these parts and found ourselves checking out the new Microsoft Store that just opened a few days ago. Despite my intentions of just looking around, we walked out with Buy HP Stream 7 Signature Edition Tablet - Microsoft Store. It has some irksome quirks- nothing that makes me want to eviscerate the ProdDevs- but it isn't too shabby for the price we paid (tablet plus 2 yr Complete for $116 w/tax after discounts).

Basically, I'm trying to decide if I should opt for a different A/V than the OEM Defender, which browser will become the new default (Chrome, Firefox, or Opera), and if there are any other apps worthy of eating up my precious memory.

I can't say enough how I can't stand Windows 8 AND the crappy, unstable apps. This coming from a guy who's never complained about an operating system before ... and I was around for DOS Shell.

In addition to the new tablet w/W8.1, I have a laptop using the OS, but I also have another tablet running Android 4.4.4 (waiting for the OTA upgrade to 5 to find me), as well as Linux Mint on an older laptop- they have all had some laggy/buggy/quirky issues.

Google Chrome won the coin toss. I also unpinned IE from the task bar and the Start menu on my daughter's account.

Now if anyone knows of a good anti-virus that is light on resources that can be had for cheap (free), I'm all ears.
