True confessions ... I miss ...

... the 5 1/4 floppy.

I still remember paying $50 for my first box of floppies ... that's $1000 in today's money I felt that I had somehow arrived in the new computer age. That would have been somewhere around 1981-ish.

I'm to young to have developed a proper appreciation of change to warrant missing things. People perhaps, but not things (yet).

I miss biopace rings, and friction shifters, but I never rode those or even knew about them. Also, I can get either used, so I dint miss them so much as I anticipate missing them in the future.
I don't know about that, I think you're old enough to miss stuff. Sarcasm for one

I also miss ripping off extra cable stations by wrapping aluminum foil around an antenna cable and sliding it to the right position ... giving you a fuzzy, but watchable signal.

Sorry, didn't mean to get all high tech on you. Hey, how about posting a photo of the ENIAC ... oh wait, it only handles text based communications. Again ... sorry man!

I would need another warehouse for enough processing power to post pics!

Seriously, I sort-of miss the MiniDisc format, which had some potential, then got killed because a) Sony and b) CD burners became ubiquitous.

Does it have to be tech stuff, or does anything go?

I miss:
-Black and white TVs, with only three stations. UHF? Oh, you have that?
-Vacuum Tube Voltmeters.

The first data base I ever saw was on punch cards.

I still have a slide rule around here somewhere...

It was kind of fun watching 16 mm film, with the wavy audio track and flicker. It was especially fun when the film would skip off the tractor cog and the class would whoop it up and have fun until the film was reset. Good times.

I only just recently (like, in the last 14 months) threw out the 256MB SCSI disc drive that I had paid ~$450 for. The thing that finally prompted me to chuck it -- besides the fact that I no longer owned a computer with a SCSI port -- was when someone gave me a 14GB USB thumb drive.

Back then, our university microcomputer lab made us rent the floppy disc. We couldn't even take it out of the lab. About 1980.

*Sigh* - I miss electronics that lasted. Even simple things these days die quickly for no reason. I pulled out a led Christmas wreath I bought last year and it's dead, also a strand of light also done in less than 2 years.

Other than that I miss rotary phones.

These belong to a guy at work. Still in their original shrinkwrapping.
