when they shrink the die of the cpu they can get faster speeds and cpus that run on less poweer. big fun all around

That's what they make people believe but it hasn't worked out that way so far, at least as far as the speed goes. They have however made speed improvements in other aspects of their architecture.
I believe they are at about the 5th, maybe 6th, generation of the "i" processors. IIRC the second generation was capable of the fastest clock speeds, approaching 5.0 GHz. Then the third generation was definitely slower. The 4th generation was getting back close to the second generation, around 4.5 GHz or a little more. I guess it is yet to be seen what maximum clock speeds the new generation is capable of.
Other than clock speeds though, each generation is capable of better performance at the same clock speed through improvements in the architecture.
