It might depend on the work ...

Some people love a hobby and think they might also love to make a living doing that hobby ... some can and do ... and some find making a living off the hobby destroys their love of the hobby.

But what about enjoying doing non-hobby things?

For example, I really enjoy working with databases. I might incorporate databases into my hobbies (I keep a very basic database-like thing in Excel tracking my cycling), but working with databases is not a hobby. It's not something I do in my spare time. However, almost all my jobs for years now have had some database component, which I've enjoyed, and probably my best job was spending about 2 years building, maintaining, and working with a particular database. That job has spurred me on to acquire more education and qualifications in that field.

Some here have mentioned teaching. I've been interested in teaching since I was about 9 years old. Fairly recently, I finally had the opportunity to get my Bachelor of Education. I discovered that teaching children is probably not the way I want to go ... but I'm still interested in teaching. If I could get into a position where I could teach adults, I'd be interested in trying that for a while ... maybe in a technical college where I could teach aspects of building databases to adults.

But what about other areas of work?

Do any of you have a desire to get into ... nursing? horticultural work? engineering? construction? truck driving? physiotherapy? ... ???

I think if I had to choose any of those things as a profession, I'd hate it within a few months. This is also one reason I've been so hesitant to go back to school. Accruing $50,000+ in debt for something I'll probably be sick of in less than a year (while ruining a hobby) is just too hard to justify.
My experience is that when you make a job out of your hobby it's not going to be a hobby anymore and you will come to realize that was a mistake.

I would want to fly though. Anything, anywhere, anytime. All I needed was better eyes.
We are an empire. Be sure to use it wisely.
