Constant traffic?

This is my first post, and I am trying my best not to be or sound judgmental.

I realize sites cost money to operate, and that money has to come from somewhere. Since it costs me nothing to join this site, obviously someone else is paying, and I might expect non-cash contributions to be extracted (ads...).

However, I maintain active memberships of several other "free" forums with much less buggy behavior. Maybe it is just my configuration, or something... So I am asking for suggestions.

A few things I've noticed over the few days I've been perusing the site:
  • The icon on the browser tab often "flickers" and or shows the "loading" symbol.
  • Text input is not close to immediate, i.e. I can sometimes type whole words before anything shows up on screen*
  • Pages freeze for no apparent reason, and then finally move/load

Using the latest Chrome, on both Mac Sierra and Windows 10.

If this is just the way the site "works" I will be sad, as there seems to be a lot of great content here. But I feel like I'm back in the '90s as far as the experience goes.

*this is my first actual post but I've started to compose several and gave up for various reasons, none related to the issues herein mentioned.

Hi Flamstead Hill,

I have not experienced any of those issues myself Im on Windows10 and Safari.

Trsnrtr 08-11-17 10:28 AM

No issues here and I use both Chrome and Safari on my desktop and laptop and safari on my devices.

My main issue lately is the page scrolling back to the top every few seconds. Seems to center on that video ad below the first post. I have also noted that there is a constant loading of data and such. I don't think I had these problems when I first joined last month.

Maybe adblocker software might help. I usually filter most ads out with my firewall PC, but the mainboard went bad on it recently and I'm just using a firewall appliance til I get the new one built.

You might try another browser if you haven't already. I don't seem to be having the issues I reported when I use Chrome.

I spoke too fast. I'm now starting to get the same issues I had with firefox and also having the same slow or buffered typing issue that you reported.

I never felt the need for an adblocker on Chrome*, but am trying it now. So far it seems to be a big help. Will see how it holds up in the longer term. Thanks for the suggestion.

*I was a long time Firefox user until maybe 1.5-2 years ago when I finally gave up on it for a lot of similar issues.

Siu Blue Wind 08-11-17 10:23 PM

Firefox doesn't have any issues for me.

FlamsteadHill 08-13-17 06:58 PM

I should clarify - Firefox was a problem on other sites, not BikeForums, as I had never heard of this site until recently.

No, maybe malware scanning would help. The bosses here frown on ad blockers (it's the site's revenue if you aren't a paying membe) and you can simply join, but it's not the ads.

Also, try searching for known problems with your OS and particular browser. But it's not the ads themselves.

I have not changed or updated anything since I last posted in this thread. Didn't log in at all in a couple days, however today the problems I've experience on this site are not showing up.

The video ad below the OP is not autoplaying as it was previously. I also have not seen the ads from the particular advertiser that seemed to be involved every time the issue was manifested.

Not quite certain how you can say it is not the advertising any more than I can say it is.

Just some thoughts; I've never had issues with my screen jumping around but I have had the same phenomenon where when I type the words ( or letters ) don't appear till seconds after I type them. This happened on my older computer and on the newer computer I now use. I don't know what causes it but had nothing to do with what forum I was on. ( I use Firefox )

For me the problem was always solved by rebooting the computer. However I've noticed in the past that the issue seems to return whenever I'm running a lot of windows. At least for me the issue has only happened once or twice with the new computer. I don't think it has anything to do with what website I'm own but that's just my opinion.

I don't know what would be causing these issues. The suggestion rollfast mentioned (malware scan) seems to be a good place to start
