Obscured URLs

Please prohibit obscured URLs such as those using bit.ly and tinyurl.com (except preview.tinyurl.com which shows the URL). There's really no reason for them in BikeForums.net, and I'm always afraid to click on them for fear of getting redirected to a shock site, hacked, rickrolled, or PDF'ed.

Many of those are created by Facebook, Twitter, and other social media sites.

how about using https://www.gianturl.com/ instead?

sometimes the actual URLs get truncated when posted to forums, which is why services like tinyurl.com were created

Then the person should retrieve the actual URL before posting.

BikeForums.net doesn't have that problem.

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

The simplest solution is to just not click on a link you think is suspicious. Where do we draw the line? If a member rickrolls someone, we ban them. If a site leads to a malware site, intentionally, we ban that member that posted the hack link. As to a PDF, they are secure and don't carry scripts.

I need to know the actual URL in order to decide whether a link is suspicious.

As you should, but I would also like to be given enough information to protect myself.

But it takes several seconds to open a PDF from a web browser. Sometimes I'm willing to wait, but not all the time.

The bottom line is we leave the choice open to you, and do not dictate to you that you or any other member cannot open these links if they choose to. Ultimately, it's your own responsibility to secure yourself. We do what we can without unnecessarily restricting others choices as well.
