Really Simple Syndication. The most popular uses of it to 1) use it in a RSS "aggregator" which would be a program you run that collects the last x articles (or in this case posts) of websites you visit frequently. This way, instead of loading up your browser and visiting 15 websites individually, you load up your aggregator and retreieve any new posts that have been added since you last read them. Useful if you visit the same sites a lot and want to simplify the process. Also good for very busy sites because instead of paying for the bandwidth of say, someone coming in a clicking on 50 pages to read the last 20 posts, they just download one small file (the rss feed) and visit the site only to make comments or post new content.
It's also used to post feeds on your home site/blog/news site. I have a site for a film festival that I'm involved in and I have feeds from several news sites that I filter and put on the front page.
