Microstructure of carbon fiber

Hello,

I am wondering if anyone is a materials person and can explain the Microstructure of carbon fiber to me versus 6061 T-6 aluminum? I realize CF is a type of polymer but my research hasn't proved it is the long monomer chain like most polymers are.
Thanks in advance,
Dan

CF is a matrix of two parts:
1. Fibers of carbon for the strength.
2. A polymer to hold the fibers rigidly in place, else all you'd have is a floppy piece of woven cloth.

And the resin (polymer) can have whatever chemical make up that is best suited to the loads/stresses imposed on it.
