Bella Ciao vs. Méral: a copy with a different angle.
1 Attachment(s)
I just found out the Bella Ciao "Santo Subito" bike is a close copy of a Méral "lady" model. However, it is evident the angles of the seat tube and head tube have been changed. It seems the Méral bicycle had a more upright angle. Also, the fork rake is more pronounced in the Méral.
If that is true, what can you expect about the handling of both bikes? |
to a great degree, it depends on the trail, which we don't have. I'm not sure I believe the new bike is a copy, great minds think alike

It's hard to really talk about specifics without really having data.
The Meral seems much like a standard drop bar sports bike in a small size then had an upright bar conversion. I suspect the hips are way forward for the pedaling in an upright position. The bike looks to have significant trail. The Bella is better situated for an upright rider, IMO. Much more seat set back which makes for more powerful pedaling. Also has long trail. I wonder if this bike was meant to be a path racer replica. Andy |
According to the BellaCiao website:
"SANTO SUBITO is a wonderfully snappy roadster inspired by the geometry of a French frame by the former bicycle manufacturer Méral in the Loire valley." "Together with our Italian frame builder we updated the overall concept and design, made the appearance a bit clearer and more decisive, while preserving its very sportive nature." It might be created as a ladies bike, but I find it very seductive for anyone. At least it is for me! |

Here's the Méral catalog from 1984. They didn't list the angles, though. I really like the randonneur version with full racks.

I think it's a very handsome bike. I feel like most people actually want a step-through frame though

Bella Ciao was the name a song of the popular resistance in Italy, to Mussolini government. during the 2nd world war..
