Fixing a Fixie,back to a road bike Guerciotti
So Ive been welder for over 30 years and know how to braze but never have tried brazing a bike frame till yesterday. I read up on some procedures,bought the parts I needed and gave it a go.
The Project, a Guerciotti SL that was turned into a Fixie by someone that obviously didnt know what they had. They cut off all the important stuff that makes it a Road bike. I re-installed all the braze on's without too much trouble. I had to modify a few small clamps to hold the parts in place and after alot of fitting I managed to get them on as best I could . I'm going to do finish and filing work but so far it looks good.I still have to double check everything before I send it off to powder coat but the results are looking correct.

Looks like that someone also shaved down the upper headtube extension, likely to fit a non original fork that was too short. While this frame is nothing too special it is too bad it was so treated then discarded later. Good job resurrecting it best you have. BTW I suggest checking the alignment before painting. Crashes are a common reason to replace a fork. Andy

Ons could braze on an extender ring then spend the time to file it to mimic the bottom. Or just live with it as is. Andy

I agree, after thinking about it for somewhat possible fix, I figured it would be more trouble than its worth,so Im just going to leave it alone .

Just thinking out loud , what if you had a ring the size of what was ground off and a mandrel to hold it all in place for brazing ?

Yes Bob , thank you for that . I wonder if they chromed the whole frame ? Also yrs. ago I had a HD springer fork striped of it's chrome it was cheap . Plus I think it should be striped anyway before PC . Thoughts ?

Its funny you mentioned it as the Welding supply shop had a few pamphlets at the counter concerning Hexavalent Chromium poisoning and a few others. I picked up a few of them to ReRead some of the bad stuff Ive forgotten about. Not much chrome on this frame except for the right rear stay.
I still need to braze on the cable guides under the bottom bracket, I was going to use a screw on plastic cable guide but since the bottom bracket has a big Star Logo hole underneath Im going to have to find some small tubing to use.

I've tried lots of different fixtures for holding small bits in place for brazing. So far, bent spokes seem to work best for me. You might want to give it a try with the BB cable guides. That's a place where the guides might move around a lot before you can get them stuck down.

I think you have done a nice job up to this point. That head tube would bug me if left unattended though. Do you know someone with a lathe? I think a small extension piece could be fashioned quite easily and once brazed in place nobody would know.

I just bought a brake line (for cars), and cut it up for small cable guide tubing of very rust resistant metal . & brazed it on..

I've used the K&S stainless tubing available through better hobby shops for cable tunnels before although mine get painted and I now just use 4130 tubing for this. Andy

Do know that you will basically end up with a butt joint for the added sleeve/extension. After Sweating the above onto the end of the HT, cutting down to replicate the OEM length and remachining to fit the headset all the inner and overlapping sleeve will be gone. But if one were to extend the HT this would be a good way to keep it all aligned during construction. Andy

As far as the Head tube issue goes, I located a donor head tube that is the exact size I need to "graft" a small section onto the Guerciotti head tube and then cut it down to fit. If it does'nt work out I can always just remove it without too much problem. I'll work on it this saturday.

And so Its finished,Brazed on another set of water bottle bosses, made some cable guides for under the Bottom Bracket, and repaired that head tube situation. Just some final sanding and filing and then off to the powder coat.
Fire Engine Red is in the cards with some Guerciotti decals coming up.

You might look up powdercoat vs paint. The powder gives a tough coat, but tends to obscure some of the crisp details of the frame.

So I made some progress on the Bike, got it back from powder coat and started to install the stickers and touch up paint. So far so good. Got to clean out the threads on the rear wheel adjusters so I gotta find out the Tap size .
The plan is to install all My Shimano Ultergra parts from another bike and ride the hell out of it.
