Cannondale Fatty tandem fork repair

True confessions: I had a serious lapse last week and ran our 2004 Cannondale tandem into a tree. Both riders are basically fine, but we managed to snap the steer tube on the fork. The blades are aluminum, with a steel steer tube that’s epoxy bonded and pinned, according to Ron Boi at RRB Bikes, who looked at it. Ron was a bit surprised by the break, and figures the steel is likely heat treated. Unfortunately he said he wasn’t equipped to do the repair.
I am looking for leads on who might be able to do this kind of repair. My initial query was to Cannondale and they politely said no thanks. Thanks for any ideas or leads.

I doubt you'll find anyone willing to take that on. You could try doing it yourself if you can separate it and re-do the glue and pins.

It's hard to imagine the steerer tube snapping without also tweaking the aluminum crown and blades. Anyway, it wouldn't be overly difficult to grind out the steel steerer tube and punch out any pins used previously. And once you reach that point you could then assess the suitability of bonding a new steerer into the crown. That said, I'd look for a new fork just to be safe. It's one thing to put your own safety at stake, but I wouldn't risk a passenger just because I was too cheap to buy a new fork.

I hear what you’re saying, but at the same time I have to notice the discrepancy between the burly blade construction and the relatively thin - and apparently somewhat brittle steerer. I really cannot see a mark of any kind on the blades/crown. No cracked paint, nothing.
Still I can see your point and wouldn’t mind finding an intact fork from someone who upgraded. This is a relatively new (to us) tandem, and we have another. Not really sure yet whether we like this bike enough to justify the expense of a fancy after-market tandem fork - which would equal what we paid for the whole bike.

1" steerer is really undersized for a tandem. This was back when we weren't smart enough to realize that tandem steerers saw the most load of the whole bike. It probably was already cracked. It will be really difficult to properly fix that fork, I don't think I would risk it. Not sure what to recommend though, my first thought is to ask Woundup

This fork has a 1-1/8” steerer. I assume that’s at least somewhat better.
I have a lead on a replacement through a helpful forum member.
