Long Shen Lugs

Just received a set of Long Shen lugs from Frame Builders Supply. Have never used them before as Henry James has always been the go to for me. I am surprised at how thin they are and welcome that there is no need to thin them out. They are not as clean inside as HJ lugs and BB, but will clean up without much effort. The seat lug is pretty hefty and will get some work done to it. For sure the shelf in there has to be taken out so I can slide the seat tube through. The BB shell has a reinforcement between the chain stay sockets, and I plan on removing that as well. It looks like an ornamental thing, not structural. Comping at the bit to get started this weekend.

I'm not familiar with anything lug-related (still contemplating taking a frame building class), but looked these up on the Frame Builders Supply website. On this page the description reads, in part, "By popular request, we've had the lip reamed out of these, allowing the seat tube to pass through during the building process." Maybe this isn't a feature of all their seat lugs, or the reaming process wasn't complete? Just curious...

These lugs aren't reamed, the lip is intentional. The lip allows the builder to leave the top of the seat tube cut square. It's an advantage for some folks, mainly production builders. My fixture doesn't work that way, it has a cone at the top of the seat tube.
I have bored it out on my lathe on a couple of lugs. It always seems like an annoying task until I do it, but it's no big deal. IIRC, I have some Llewellyn lugs with a lip.

That's a manufacturing convenience. Once a frame manufacturer has decided on a specific geometry, they can cut all the seat tubes for that size frame to the same length and not have to bother about finishing off the top of the seat lug.

Custom and one-off frame builders often prefer lugs without that feature, to have the seat tube extend beyond the top of the seat lug. This can allow for more elaborate finishing treatments and also can work to minimize seat tube distortion by providing a heat sink.

I've only worked with these. I have just taken a file to the lip so I can run the seat tube all the way through. I find it better to feed silver from the top of the lug because if I can clean up any additional silver easily as I remove the excess seat tube.

Long Shin seems to be the #1 lug manufacturer in the world. Pretty sure they make the Llewellyn and Sachs lugs, and lugs for various other private label manufacturers as well. I've never seen a low quality Long Shin part, although I've not always liked the designs.

I've done both ways. My older jig holds the tube at it's mid point, my current one by the ends. But like cynikal I too like having the above the joint surface to feed or drain filler with. Andy
