Adding waterbottle bosses
Looking for input/opinion
I have a project to take a '82 nishiski cro-mo lugged frame and turn it into a utility/commuter. This will include replacing almost everything, adding baskets etc and repainting (probably rattle can) The frame does not have the eyelettes/bosses for water bottllse and a would like to add them. How feasable/practical is it for rookie to braze these on, without destroying the frame? I have done silver soldering for jewlery, sweat soldering for copper pipes. I have a bernzomatic propane torch and a bernzomatic mapp gas/oxygen torch. (and I read and follow instructions) Any suggestions and hints? thanks |
you could just use little bands like hose clamps with a peice of rubber to strap the cage to the frame
that way if you ever change your mind about it you can just take them off |
True......but I am also looking at using these for attaching a compact pump so I am not sure it it will work....and there is the "I want to see if I can do it factor"
I may just go to a proper sized frame pump and keep the lines simple thanks |
Go for it. Use lots of flux and try not to overheat the tubing. 56% silver works great and flows at low temperatures. Almost a no-brainer except for possible heat control issues with the Bernzomatic. You might want to do a pratice run on some scrap tubing first.

You have two real choices: Braze them in. It would be good practice for bike-type brazing and since you are repainting anyway, you aren't going to be worried about the original paint. Plus, brazing is fun and it might inspire you to to do some bigger projects like rack braze ons, racks, a frame...............you get the point.
Or you could go fast and easy by drilling the holes and popping in some riv-nuts. No muss, no fuss-but not nearly as fun! |

When using a mapp benzo, hold the torch about 3" away and direct the flame at the water bottle boss hole. The boss will heat quicker than the tube , when the tube starts turning cherry red around the boss, just touch the joint between the boss and the tube with the silver and stop heating. You will need a tap to chase the threads in the boss.
