Bent seat stay
I guess this would go in this category. I have a bent seat stay on the non-drive side. Looks like a nice clean but long bend starting just above the trackouts and leading to the cross bar. I hope this can be fixed...It's bent about 2-3 inches inward I would estimate.
PS: It's steel tubing. |
You can try using a c-clamp to bend it back in place. You'll need to make yourself something like a jig/tube blocks to hold the tube in place while you bend it. Take something like a 1x3 about the length of your seat stay. Using a jig saw, cut a big sweeping arc starting at one end and going to the other. Take half round file and file the ends of the 1x3 such that it can sit comfortably on the seat stay. Make a tube block that fits the seat stay. Now you can hold the 1x3 against the seat stay, take a big c-clamp with the tube block and position one end of the c-clamp at the bend and the other on the outside of the 1x3. Then start clamping. You can use a straight edge, like a ruler, held up against the seat stay to measure your progress.

Yeah, I'm not understanding that. 1x3 and a c-clamp. My luck I'll probably completely ruin it before it's fixed.

ebbett has a good suggestion. Take two pieces of wood - 1" by 3" by "as long as possible". Carve a shallow groove in the center of the pieces lengthwise (so the stay will lay in there). Now sandwich the bent stay with the wood and clamp them together with a couple of C-clamps. Go easy and try to slowly work the bent stay back to shape.

Thanks guys, I think I got it. I did the old "stand on wood" thing and it went back in shape, well not entirely. You probably wouldn't even notice if I passed you.
The 'good' stay did push alittle in the same way as the bad, but it's all good. I just need to find a hub that's 110mm now, because this hub the way it sits now, not going to work Lol. It's a pain in the rear (literally!) PS: And for that "bending stays by hand" for spacing problems, Ha! Maybe I wish I was that strong! |
Oh boy...
