Franklin Frames for painting??!!
 

Has anyone used them to refinish a bike? They have the most reasonable prices of anyone I have contacted but I can't find much out about them. Any suggestions?

There was a thread on this a while ago. CS1 had a frame done there. I looked at the prices, and while they are reasonable, I took my frame back home to blighty. I was quoted 150 pounds for a full on respray and repaired head tube by Universal Cycle Centre, and about the same from Argos Cycles. Bob Jackson would be less. But postage will hurt!

I used Franklin Frames to repair and repaint my Serotta a few years ago. I think he (Jeff?) did an excellent job on both counts. Franklin Frames does repairs and painting for other builders. I think that's how the company makes most of its money. The Franklin framesets that are built in Newark, Ohio are very nice, but it was my understanding that FF concentrates now on repairs and paint, often sub-contracted work from other U.S. builders and distributors.

Yes, that was my bike! A friend of mine bought that on Ebay then I'm not sure what he did with it. Do you have it now? You're right, it was a Nova Special X but I did not have the cash to order a period decal set for the bike.

Franklin frames is Jack Franklin. He does all the work himself, and employs no one. He's been doing frame building/repairing and painting for some 35 years, since he was a teen(as he told me). He does do a lot of repairs and painting for other companies.

His shop/barn is out in the country :)


He built a frame for me 10 years ago, and this spring he did some repair and a repaint of a Rivendell frame for me. I'm quite happy with his work. I have nothing but good things to say about his work. His paint work isn't the high end premium stuff like Joe Bell etc. , but it's excellent enough for the average cyclist. For what he charges, you won't be diappointed, you get nice Dupont Imron paint in about a huge array of colors.

Repainting a frame is also a good time to add any braze-ons you ever wanted, as he charges modest prices for this work. I think a chain hanger for the Riv frame was $9.

What I like about Jack is his willingness to share his extensive knowledge about frame building, painting and repair. When I phoned him about a bum Rivendell frame I bought used, he knew all the possible causes and how to fix them. . . and he did the work well. He's got a nice digital alignment table that makes aligning frames quick work for him. He does a lot of aligning because not many have that kind of tool around in their shop. . it's a little expensive!

I don't know if the search engines have his latest web address or not, his provider changed, so now it's http://home.windstream.net/franklinframe/frame.html It's a low tech, basic site, and his frame price list is a rough guide, not absolute. Many of his prices are in his head, so if you want something not listed, just ask him.
