columbus zona OS with s bend chainstays
 

anyone know of a maker of a BB that will work with this tubeset? lugged construction.

Short version-there isn't one and s bend stays look goofy w/a lugged frame- fillet braze it.


Long version-
If you were to put the s bend seatstays in a regular lugged shell, the dropout ends almost touch- meaning you'll have to bend the stays to make them work. Unless you have a bit of experience with bending the thin Zona-type stays, I wouldn't try it. Besides, the bending would tend to straighten the stays and that's moving in the wrong direction for tire clearance.

An MTB shell would have better cs angles but the st/dt would be way off for a road frame.

FYI, Columbus recently started making an s bend cs for use with lugged shells, afaik, R.Sachs is the only one carrying them.

Standard BB shell is about 7 or 8 degree angle on the CS. The mountain shell is wider and will work. As mentioned, it will most likely require some reworking of the DT/ST interior angle as well as the ST/CS angle. All of this is absolutely doable and isn't that difficult.

Tweaking the angles of a shell or increasing the radius of the CS bend are not difficult to do.

Not sure which Columbus stays you are referring to but some of the S-bend Columbus stays are not 30/17 oval shape and won't work with most lugged BB shells as a result.

Kirk Pacenti used to carry the Long Shen MTB BB shell that used 30/17 S-bend stays. I believe Peter at Ceeway still has them. Nova carries MTB shells but they use 22mm round stays.

You can always take a standard BB shell and chop the integrated CS bridge out, insert scrap stays into the ports and bend them out to accommodate your needs. Then peen the CS port back into shape, file out the peen marks and go about your business.

Sometimes the fun is when the process isn't "plug and play".

yeah the zona os s bend chain stays are 26/17 so i think the plan now is straight stays. thanks for the input fellas.

also curious, is RS selling to hobbyists again?

Not that I know of- I didn't think about that when I suggested them before, sorry about that.
