RIVNUTS Alu Steel SS smooth Serrated?

I have 2 aluminum frames with loose rivnuts that need replacing.

Which will give best long term grip and strength? I'm thinking serrated SS but I'd like to hear what you guys think.

There are different diameter RivNuts in use on bikes. So whatever material make sure you have the correct fitting ones. I have augmented the fitting with epoxy a number of times. I would practice (on sheet or tubing with the same wall thickness as the bike has) before doing the actual replacement. Get a handful of each material and see which gives you (using the tool you will be using) the best fit and tightness. They aren't very expensive compared to what they do. If all else is equal I'd prefer SS as the material but I suspect you'll find a difference in the tightening between SS and Al. Andy.

Thanks. So are you saying there're different diameters for a given thread size? M5 X 0.8 are available in different O.D's?

If they are already in place, perhaps you just need to force them to expand More?

That will depend on if they'll drop out through the BB for removal!!! If they wont then I'll just re-expand them...

vent holes in the bb are probably pretty small, so you're unlikely to have success getting them out that way

They are expanded, at the most basic, by putting a flat washer across the flange on the outside ,
and a greased bolt in them

same 5x.8 . and tightening the bolt

others have used a QR from a Seatpost, or hub put thru a tube

Spare axle with the cone and locknuts , perhaps ..
and just closing the QR to Pull the Riv nut thread against the outside flange..
