Paint over powder coat
Hi,
I am repainting a lugged steel frame. I want to powder coat it, but I also would like to paint the lugs a contrasting color. Any suggestions on how to do this? Ride Safe, Joe |
Remove them and do both separately?
That would seems to be a hassle though, it not really impractical. Why do you want them a different color? |
A good Powder coating specialist may be able to lay down the 2 colors in separate steps and either 1 or 2 heating steps
Cloisonné is an old technique for laying down 2 colors Cloisonné - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia It involves a little wall surrounding the separate color area.. There may be also a Powder with a much Higher melting Point.., It could be applied first ,say your lugs, then masked off and the main color applied, of a lower melting point then It brought up to it's melting point .. (Jewelers use Silver solders of various Melting points to make sub portions and then attach them with a softer solder. ) all else seek out the folks doing the work and ask.. Spectrum In Colorado has been mentioned as a top company. |

Some processes are just not that compatible.
Not impossible, but your needing to ask suggests what you don't know will foil you. Wet paint. |
Mask the lugs and powder the remainder, mask the powder and paint the lugs.

I've sprayed Duplicolor clear over a powdercoat sample tile. Duplicolor is lacquer based and didn't cause any of the coating underneath to wrinkle or react in any other undesirable way. I can't comment on the durability though, since I haven't tried it on a frame.
