Bamboo Mk2

1 Attachment(s)
I'm almost done on my second bamboo frame.

I have made many improvements over my first effort - some due to experience and some with help and suggestions from others.

- nicer (and lighter) dropouts (Paragon)
- smoother lugs (tip from Canaboo on how to wrap for compression)
- better FD hanger mounting (using Shimano tech documents for measurements)
- mounts for a bottle cage

Hopefully it will be complete on Christmas eve.

That looks nice. A tip for getting your dropout wrapping more streamlined is to use a rat tailed rasp to open up the inside of the stays in diameter and wrap some glass/thickened Epoxy around your dropout tangs before inserting them. Then you can let that cure and shape it to a nice tapered transition before you wrap the final layer of carbon.

http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=424457 Weight of the various cable stops and FD hanger (inc mounting screws).

http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=424458 Weight of the whole frame (not including seat post clamp - hasn't arrived yet). There is a second coat of polyurethane on it now, so let's call it 2.05kg

http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=424459 Smoother lug. That is about 5mm of carbon under the BB and around each side.

http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=424460 Disks of carbon for bottle bosses were cut from a broken rowing oar shaft using a hole saw. The diameter of the oar shaft was roughly the same as my bamboo tubing.

I like the ingenuity of using the rowing oar for parts. Looks good.

hi,

great frame, looks great !

How are you screwing the bottle cage screws ? Straight into the carbon patches ?

I have two nuts behind each, bonded in with fibreglass. Not particularly hi-tech.

These Guys: Dragon Plate, sell Carbon Tubes Braided Carbon Fiber Tube
cant the Bamboo carbon thread wrap and Epoxy, composite joints work with it too?

The same (or similar) method will make a bike with carbon tubes too. Plenty of folks have done it.

Looks great, JonnyHK! What did you use for a jig?

Just checked out your pics. Dang that's cool! Fascinating how the drop outs stick into the chainstays like that. Great work.

Really nice, bet you can't wait to ride it!

I'm not likely to ever ride this one. It was a birthday present for a the boyfriend of one of my friends. She thought he'd love one...

Here's the lucky lad opening his present a couple of weeks back.

I like the second photo with the WTF look on his face.

Sorry - no idea why pics have come in sideways.
