2015 Fuji Cross 1.5 frame, 2005 Manitou Black 120mm downhill fork with 'infinite travel' height adjust. Rebuilt each year, most of it's miles are in lockout mode. Set the height at about mid-range and lockout, then geometry is identical to the original Fuji carbon blade fork that came with the frame. Sure, there's a weight penalty, but the carbon fork cannot mount racks. 700x35 tires are the largest that will fit the fork and provide manufacture's minimum arch clearance.

Feedback Sports, 'Sport Mechanic' work stand. Very strong but heavy for a portable stand. I'm exactly six feet tall with normal proportions and the bike fits fine. I wear size 11 SPD shoes and there's no heel clearance issue with the rear bags.

Custom low rider racks built from old Axiom outer frame. Mounts machined from Delrin and hand fitted to avoid compressing the fork casting. Front axle and 'V' brake mounts carry most of the load. Bombproof (but not tested with a bomb yet).

BB5 brake calipers. No matter where you go, every LBS has pads. So they're antique. So what? Very reilable when you're 500 miles from the nearest civilization.

M525 Holotech crank with the crappy factory finish removed. They polish up great, and any blemishes can be sanded out in minutes and re-polished. Minor modification to fit the frame's bottom bracket on this bike - just a little filing. Crankset runs two chainrings with a bashguard on the outer ring position. Bottle cages are Topeak adjustables.

Wide range ten speed Tiagra cassette. With the chainline set just right, you can grab any gear any time, regardless of chainring selected with no binding or undue stress on the chain. Very smooth drivetrain! I wasn't sure I could make it work, but it did! Gearing with 700c's is great for climbing. Wheelset is 40 hole with Sun Rhyno-Lite's and cartridge bearing hubs. Great for dirt or packed gravel with wider tires.

Note the absence of the flimsy Topeak slotted front mounts on the rear rack. The mounts used are from an old Axiom rack. The Topeak Super Tourist DX (disc) rear rack was chosen for it's superior support of the stiffner on the back of the rear-roller bags. Using the Axiom front mounts actually 'boxes' the seat stay, making it less flexible. This wa shte strongest solution I could come up with for putting a load on the rear of a relatively lightweight cross frame. Handling is precise.

The idea was to have two wheelsets, one with the 700x35 Nimbus Sport Blackbelts for dirt or gravel, one for the 700x32 Continental Sport Contact slicks. Easy changout. Original Fuji carbon blade fork is fun, too. 170mm crank on the bike, 175mm spare. 'DeFender' front fenders clip on. Street fenders are Portland Design Works. I like their mounting system. Spare front wheel had an accident before it was ever installed on the bike - waiting for a new matching rim to re-lace it.
