So this is a "stumble stone." They've researched places where people either fled or were arrested, then subsequently died in camps or, like this man, in combat. This was especially poignant for me. Some of you may know that I work for the American Battle Monuments Commission, who preserves the U.S. memorials and battle cemeteries worldwide. I often visit Normandy for work, and this courageous fellow fled Germany, enlisted in the U.S. Army, and died on the beaches of France.
