Etiquette Question

SILLY one... On a ride yesterday. guy passes me on slight incline that leads to a very small climb, we exchange pleasantries...great day out, nice, cya, leaves me... hit the climb and I'm starting to catch-up to him, get about 3/4 of the way up and I'm right behind him. At this point, I knew I could, and wanted to just blow by him to the top but for some reason a little voice was in my head telling it was a *ick move on such a small climb so I just settled in and spun the remainder of the way right behind him. How do you handle such a situation? One side of me says I should have done my ride and passed him, other side says its not a race, guy would think you're a tool (which is probably correct as I'm even posting this!)

Ar you training or just enjoying the wind in your face? Who cares what he thinks? You have your objectives, he has his

I guess so in the future I have a better idea of what is appropriate? I think the answer is just do your ride and if that means you want to pass someone and power up to the top , have at it...who cares.

Give another Plesantry as you Pass the guy again , maybe not Blow By the Guy so as to rub it in. Or Do.

In a Stage race dropping other competitor on a climb wins you GC time at the finish if you can maintain the Gap.

Left unsaid Training on your road bike full lycra Kit.. or JRA on your way to work in Suit and Tie? Hawaiian Shirt and Flip-flops?

Now get back to work ..

I have people pass me on climbs, and then my gravitational advantage takes effect on the descent, and I blow by as I feather my brakes and exchange greetings.

I don't see passing someone after they passed me as anything other than going at different speeds depending on terrain, or how I feel.

If someone passed me, then seemed to be intentionally blocking my path I might get irritated, otherwise I just enjoy my ride, regardless of relative pace.

That is all good in theory. However, in practice, if someone passes me, I sometimes use it as motivation to increase my pace and try to keep the faster rider in sight as long as possible... I rarely catch anyone who passes me. :)

Personally, I would rather someone pass me than sit on my wheel.

I personally don't care what people think of me. I'm on a ride and if I have to pass someone, I pass them. I'm going to go my speed. I wouldn't expect someone to change their speed just so I don't get offended. Seems silly to me.

Yes, "silly" and the word I used to start my thread. I got it and kinda knew that but was just looking for verification...thanks.

Next time ... pass him!!

I hate it when someone rides right behind me on a climb.

I know people are faster than me on hills. I expect people to pass me on hills. I want people to pass me on hills.

Leave me alone in my misery!

Also ... I tend to do unexpected things when I'm climbing a hill ... like stop suddenly and without warning and start to walk.

If I'm commuting and I'm not late for work than I say the magic SCR mantra "It's not a race I'm just trying to get home". If I'm training/joy riding on my own then screw em all, I'll go as fast as I want to, especially on climbs since I weight only about 135 lbs. and I usually have an easier time.

BlazingPedals 04-17-15 07:20 PM

Whether it's because 'bents don't climb as well, or because *I* don't climb as well, it's not too rare for me to pass someone at the bottom of a big hill, and have them re-pass me before the top. If I passed them once, I'll do it again, and I certainly don't expect them to hang behind me. They'll usually comment something like "see ya on the downhill." Which is just about the way it usually works out.

Stucky 04-17-15 08:58 PM

I'd pass him, and fart as doing so.

Northwestrider 04-17-15 10:38 PM

As you said , its not a race. So just ride your own pace. If that involves passing someone, or being past by someone, so be it.
