I think they're for lazy people! At least that's who I always see on them. :)

Those people are shunned to this section: http://www.bikeforums.net/electric-b...-bicycles.html

DUI mobiles. At least down here. ebike....maybe. Not for me, but they sort of kind of have a place. Putting an engine on a bike? No. Go buy a moped and stop pretending you want to ride a bike.

Wilfred Laurier 05-01-15 10:16 AM

They represent the worst of both worlds.

Little Darwin 05-01-15 11:04 AM

I can't imagine ever owning one, and I hate when one of them passes me spewing exhaust fumes on the rail trails I ride to avoid breathing exhaust fumes from cars... Really ticks me off because at least on the road, most cars have lower emissions than what I have encountered with motorized bikes.

But whatever floats your boat.

Darth Lefty 05-01-15 11:10 AM

When I was 8, I thought it was awesome

bmthom.gis 05-01-15 12:19 PM

Bikes aren't really made to be motorized. If you want something with a motor, go buy something that was made to have one.

caloso 05-01-15 12:21 PM

The ones I've seen have been loud, stinky, and slow.

JanMM 05-01-15 12:28 PM

Things not to be spoken of.

Booger1 05-01-15 12:41 PM

If that's your thing.....I don't have a problem with it.

Roll a pack of Camels in my sleeve, slick my hair back, put on my Levi's that are standing in the corner, put on jack boots.....Let's roll.

Leebo 05-01-15 12:45 PM

Scooter? You need a red scarf to ride a vespa.

The worst?

There's a murder of tools around here locally that ride the MUT on gas powered recumbents.

Last few years on Tour de Nebraska I've seen a few people bring them...You tend to only see them and their riders at camp late in the day or otherwise at the first climb in the morning, then they're off the back.

Gas powered recumbents..... Now that's an image a didn't need in my head!

First time I saw a pair of recumbents side-by-side cruising a flat bit of MUT without pedaling on my morning commute...I thought, "There's no F'in way that is possible....wait...wwwuuuuuuuuuuuuuuttt?!?!"

Yes, the worst.

They are still slower and less comfortable than 'normal' motor vehicles, yet are not silent and clean like bicycles. The existence of gas-powered bicycles make me think that someone sat down to come up with a way to make bicycles less clean and efficient, but still not offer the practicality or range of a car or real motorcycle.

Electric power assist bikes are not my cup of tea, but at least they are clean and quiet.

I guess I'm odd.

I am a cyclist AND I ride motorized bicycles....built three so far.

It's a hobby like anything else and a fun one at that. Put a cheap, Chinese bike motor on a Huffy and if you can actually tinker with that engine enough to get it to run good...then you have a little machine that will take you just about anyplace. I love mine.

Why's it bother you? It's not like motorized bikes ride along side of you for two miles... It's like any other noise maker cyclist encounter along the roads.

Eric3.0 05-02-15 09:50 AM

BTW...motorized bicycles have been around since the dawn of bicycles.

Wolf Dust 05-02-15 01:05 PM

Exhaust fumes.

wolfchild 05-02-15 01:29 PM

They are stupid and I don't like them....If you want motorized then buy a motorcycle or a moped.

Redhatter 05-02-15 04:13 PM

They're illegal around here… you're allowed an electric pedal-assist bicycle with a motor up to 200W, but a petrol engine is out of the question.

+1000

About once a month I see some a-hole riding one on the local bike trail -- where they are prohibited. :notamused:

Robert C 05-02-15 08:10 PM

I have looked into them out of steam-punk inspired curiosity. They seem to be for people that want to tinker.
