Coincidence or not?

I'm trying to sell a used carbon road frame on craigslist.

Within 24 hours of each other, I get these emails.

1.
From: Jason S*****

Hi,

I have a 58 frame, brand is Scott team CR1, like new condition. Itís big for meÖI donít know that youíre looking for something bigger or just want to sell it. So let me know so we can trade or not.

Thanks for consideration

Tim

Hi,

I have scot CR1 team frame size 58 ( too big) for me, Do you want to trade? Itís really good condition Öbecause itís big that why I want to swap the frame. Please let me know

Thank you

Is this a random coincidence or is there something afoot? (And if so, what exactly is afoot? I can't think of a good explanation.)

That is probably some sort of scam. Try to meet both of them at the same time, same place. See what happens.

Well, the problem is that I don't really need a size 58 frame, since I already have more frames than I need, and size 58 is way too big for me anyway (even the 54 listed in my ad was on the large side.) So I'd have trouble explaining myself if either of those is legit.

My first guess was that it is an attempt to launder a stolen Scott frame, but one of those guys later sent me a lowball offer on my own frame, which somewhat was out of character for a bike thief.

Sounds like a scam. I'd bet if you played along and asked for info, it would turn out that the responders aren't local; would want you to ship your bike to them, or proffer some kind of deal whereby you put money in "escrow" or otherwise be tricked into send money/the bike to them...and get nothing in return. Especially if they did not provide a phone number.

And more so that they supplied a first and last name. Who resp;onds to CL ads with their last names? Only scammers do that (phony names of course) to instill confidence.

Since you don't want to trade for a 58, politely decline the offers. Doesn't matter whether they are legit. I suspect a scam of some kind.

Don't reply to either of them. they both came from the same person and if you replay they will get your email. then you will start receiving more spam emails with the intention to hijack your computer or whatever device you use for emailing.
Craigslist is a good service for buy and sell stuff but also used for malicious people trying to get into their users.
