Need Advise on Cyclocross Bike

I have been looking at this bike

Nashbar Single-Speed Cyclocross Bike

And I need some advise, I am looking for a cheap cross racing bike to get started racing in. I have been looking at this because it is cheap and the one gear contributes to the price. But I have heard bad reviews on it. Is it a bike i can just slowly upgrade? Or are ther any other cross bikes under $400 or so dollars?

At $400 you are better off looking at CL for a nice used crosser. only reason I got new was because the lbs had a 2012 trek x01 for $600. Unless you prefer single speed i would not go with that. You may also find one at a yard sale. Just looked at ebay and there are several in the $300- $800 range. If you could jump up to the $700 range you could get a right nice cross bike. Only trouble with ebay is you can't get a test ride in.

What would you upgrade?

Imho the wheels are likely subpar, as with all bikes below $2000, the handlebar setup with the brakes looks awful, I would probably have to fit new bars to be confortable, and I'm guessing as its a cheap steel frame it's likely heavy.

Dylan do you already have your mind set on this bike? I would suggest trying other bikes around where you are. I would also suggest you try a single speed locally. They will work the crap out of you. Do you ride currently? I don't get why you want to get a new bike and sink money into it, But it does not look horrible but don't forget you get what you pay for. I saw in the $700 range some pretty nice bikes on ebay.

Nashbar imports Stuff from the same suppliers as Other contract outsourced importers do ..
they just dont have any dealers .. only service is sending it back.

I always take any New bike apart and put it back together , cross racing that will be a weekly ritual .

rather than Upgrade save the $1K that begins to get a Nice Geared Race Bike , to compete in those races too ..

Extra Wheels, more freewheels and cogs for the 1 speed to adapt the gear to the course.
