Good Bike Brand in a budget
So.... I do not know much about bicycles in general but I will be needing one for school since I had to move out of on-campus housing and having a car is too much money at the time. So I want to look for a bicycle that is good quality yet under a budget of $300, I know it probably is tough. The streets are fine, some rocky and dirt roads now and then, but smooth roads most of the way. So does anyone have a recommendation for a good bike under budget... I am 5'11 with about 160 pounds. Thank you.

Your best bet is buying used. You can get a decent bike for that amount. Get a friend that knows bikes to help you browse CL and local sources. Also some local bike stores take trade-ins and might be a good source. But it's importsnt to get something that fits - start with sizes around a 56 and see how that goes.

Here's what I got for my daughter, and it is just a tad above your budget:
Priority Bicycles
The problem my daughter has, and that you'll have, because you are both in college towns, is theft. She actually keeps hers locked up inside the house where she rents a room, because her housemates cannot be trusted and too many people are in and out. She mainly rides it recreationally, and takes the bus back and forth otherwise.
I've another college friend who rides a dumpster bike. He fished a frame from a dumpster and scavenged some parts, spray-painted the frame black, and he's got a rideable bike that looks unattractive and cost him almost nothing.
