Will LBS custom paint a build?
I'm in Toronto area, and I was wondering if any bike shops will paint the frame a different colour before assembling the bike, for a $1000 steel bike, everything else being stock. Would they do it? How much would it cost?
The decals would have to be removed, and I wouldn't care to put them back on.

not all shops will paint a bike... if they are set up to paint and do painting as part of their business, I am sure they would...if they do not, ask them if there is anyone they recommend who paints bikes...painting bikes is a bit of a different thing than painting other things...you do not want just anyone painting your bike...

I've seen a lot of bike shops that contract with local frame painters/powdercoaters. Best thing to do is call them up and ask. Price will depend on what you're wanting. It can be fairly cheap ~$200 to expensive.

Ask them to build it up for you after you've had it painted.
Take the stock frame to a painter or a powder coater, get that work done, then take the finished frame back to the shop to install the rest of the components.

True North Cycles is a custom builder in Belwood, Ontario, and they do paint their own bikes.
You could call them and find out if they paint other bikes too.
They claim to have unlimited color selection too.

One of my LBS's will do it. They charge about $600.00 but that includes chemically stripping the frame. He won't paint over paint.

Sounds like it's pretty expensive. I guess this makes it worth picking your bike model based on the colour, or just living with a colour you don't like. Thanks for chiming in, everyone!
