Seriously, this topic has been well trodden. BD provides value and quality at a you-choose-for-yourself price point. Many, many happy buyers can attest to that. I see a BD bike about every third trip while out riding in the DC area. Side note, I see one or more Motobecane's on almost every ride on the local MUP's. They are not uncommon here. QT |

If we strip out some of the personal attacks in this thread and any other one about BD it may actually get interesting. I prefer Italian or German road bikes equipped with Campy so BD will never be on my radar. With that being said, I do recognize their place in the market and have no problem with it. They have a niche and they serve it well. My question is, why do so many people take such a personal afront to BD or Performance? These people act like the companies are crooks. I just do not get it. Do you have the same issue with all on-line retailers? or just bike companies?
I totally understand the need for LBS. I support mine. I have purchased 2 mtbs and many other things from them this year alone. They provide a great service to me and I love them for that. I also buy most of my bike related food and accessories at Performance, which is a few short miles from my office. I purchase many things on line as well. It is convenient, less expensive and I can get what I want. My LBS has very limited choices in clothes and brands. They are a Trek and Giant dealer. I wanted Colnago. Again, I love my LBS but they can't be everything to everybody. Neither can BD. I just do not understand the hate for BD. They are upfront about the bike, what it comes with and what to do when it arrives. I ordered a GT hybrid from them years ago. It actually arrived the very next day. I was floored but I am aware that they are based out of my town and have a distribution center about 25 miles from my house. That bike was put together in about 10 minutes. Put the wheel on, attach the brake cable and put on the handlebars. Simple. I did have to true a wheel but what a great experience. I was looking for a descent and inexpensive hybrid and that is what I paid for and what I got. We have plenty of riders in our "A" group that ride on Trek, Giant and etc. There are also ones that ride on Motobecane. They are all good bikes. |

Anyone that is selling a used bike will find BD a competitor. That, IMHO, is the big reason for the rumor mongering and personal attacks. If you bought a Giant bike in 2006 for $500, there's a good chance you'll only get $250 for it today. You might have been able to get more but a shopper at BD can find a NEW bike with a warranty (which is typically overlooked but people that have USED them swear by them!) for the same price. The new bike may be a bit heavier than that bike from 2006 but even though it doesn't weigh more, the used bike is still a second-hand affair and everything that entails (drivetrain wear, bumps and bruises to the wheels, tire wear and aging, handlebar tape or grips wear, etc.). There are so many reasons, in addition to the one above, that could explain the resentment but the world changes, we move on... |

Please, don't read into this that I hate LBS's, I don't like what they charge but they have to pay for employees, space, insurance, advertising, etc so it's expensive to run a business, I get this because I use to run a business, but in any business there is bound to be competition it's part of the war plan and you either have to adjust to fight back or surrender and run. |

I see the 16th century man showed up.
All kidding aside, there are some commercial deals that are made with a handshake, but the handshake is simply agreeing to having papers drawn up for legal signatures at a later date. Some sales are made on a handshake but those have to be less than $500. There are also the sale or purchase of securities where all the deals are done with a handshake. All of this is also part and parcel to an oral contract, after the parties agree orally they seal the deal with a handshake and then finalize it with a written contract depending on the circumstances of the deal. But in normal peoples lives where all they deal with loans, contracts, etc is all done with signatures because normal people have a tendency to try to rip others off, a lot of commercial transactions and some sales don't have that issue. |

I actually spend some time with paper and pencil last night running numbers on what you get from Bikes Direct in an Ultegra Group, or a Dura Ace Group Ti, or Carbon Road Bike. Even if you are a total klutz, who hates wenching. Factor in $50.00 for minor adjustments.
If you can look past the decals, want a bike to ride, and not impress some Yuppie friends I see value in what they offer. JMHO |
