Spin Class music - what do you like?
Hey all,
I'm an avid road, mountain and spin class cyclist. In addition to participating in spin classes for the past 10 years, I'm finally taking the leap to begin teaching.
Only problem is... music. I need your help in identifying some excellent music to use for teaching class. So, if you do spin a lot, teach it, or just know of some great music that you think would work, lemme' know.
Here's what I need:
Slow tempo: for hill work and pyramids
Mid tempo: power spins, jumps, intervals
Fast tempo: sprints, intervals, standing runs, etc.
THANKS!!

I would definitely check into some of the DJ doboy mixes, they have a good mix up of slow to fast beat music without questionable lyrics.

Just don't make off the cuff racial remarks about the music. I left the local YMCA because of such remarks.

I've been teaching for almost 5 years. I play EVERYTHING!!! I have almost 5000 songs on my iPod, and I use the playlist feature to setup my classes. I use mostly rock & alternative, with a lot of late 80s and early 90s stuff ( I was a radio jock back then, so I have a big soft spot for the era ). But I also use some jazz/fusion, funk, techno and even some hiphop- just gotta watch the lyrics.

Hey Hollywood, sounds like you want to rock the house! With great music you'll get a solid following.
Look at something like this to start, then don't forget some classical stuff for fun (William Tell Overture),and electronica/groove is great.
This link has samples you can listen to:

Thanks for the suggestions...
I've got about 2000 songs on my PC with everything from Electronica to Nine Inch Nails to the best of 2Pac. BUT, as was said, the hardest part is finding something without questionable lyrics!!
As for getting outside, I spend 2 hours a week teaching spin, I get my gym membership for free (pool, weights, etc.) and in my opinion, there is no better way to perfect a nice round, smooth pedal stroke that will carry you up and over hills faster than you did before. Just my opinion though...
Keep the suggestions coming...

Olivia Newton John's "Let's Get Physical", comes to mind. No seriously, hopefully the spin class you instruct will have some of the same people return for your session. If so, that means they like the way you teach it. I would ask some of your regs', and see what they might like to hear. One of my personal favs' would be "Flight Of The Bumblebees" for some fast pace spinning. For a shorter fast interval, the theme song from "The Green Hornet" TV show comes to mind.
Edit: Don't be surprised if this thread gets moved to "Training, and Nutrition".
I would ask Joe to move it there since it is related to training.

i apologize to you Hollywood for asking a simple question and getting comments like these. With 1000's of threads, there are people who feel the need to respond to everything. This used to be a great forum....
anyway, the original question. Spinning has been a great addition to my winter program. I can spin and lift or spin then swim, etc and get a great workout.
I like an instructor that has a good collection and has different programs for different days of the week. You have hardcores that attend m,w,f classes, so they expect a different workout/music every once in a while. Music is a contentious subject in the spin world.
There is a 'something for everyone' way to go. I know aerosmith is popular, remixes of old songs, I want you to want me by cheap trick, smooth criminal by alien ant farm, red hot chili peppers, nod your head by will smith, ballroom blitz, etc.
but you also need warm up and warm down music. every class ends with mellow peter gabriel or Sting.
nothing wrong with that.

When I did spinning on stationary bikes, I usuall had: Nightwish(medium), Marilyn Manson(high), Pillows(medium), Rob Zombie(high), Slayer(high), and other high beat music. Ofourse some of these might not be appropriate for spinning classess, depending on the people attending.
