For me it's more that I seem to get more for my money with a $3k-ish mountain bike compared to a $3k-ish road bike. I mean I'd expect my mountain bike price to go down if I switched out the suspension and disk breaks for a rigid fork/tail, plus rim breaks.

An inexpensive road bike will perform almost as well as a super expensive one. That is not the case on mountain bikes.

Interesting topic. I do believe part of the reasoning has to do with the relatively more expensive brifters that are found on most road bikes. Another part may have to do with economies of scale, i.e. higher MTB sales making the average production costs of MTB's lower. There's also the kids' market. A lot of kids could use MTB's without a problem, but road bikes seem to be targeted more at adults with well-paying jobs. This idea might cause some form of mark-up on merchants' behalf.
