...how many of you who don't bike commute decided to be kind to the earth and rode your bikes to work or for errands, rather than take the car/truck/van/suv?

Actually, shamefully, today is the one day this week that I didn't bike commute, and it is because I've got a bunch of gear to pick up after work, and I don't have a bike that can handle all that. However, the car does run on biodiesel, and next week at St. Louis's big Earth Day celebration I'll be educating people about alternative fuels (and bicycling, of course, I'll have my tall bike with me).

In general I have a very nice bike commute, and this is a good time of the year for it. My car has only gotten a few miles in the last month, and all of it on recycled vegetable oil, so I'm doing OK.

If anyone here comes to the St. Louis Earth Day activies in Forest Park on May 1st, ride your bike, since there is free valet parking for bikes again this year.

Well, I'm in Metro-Atlanta too and today's forecast was pretty nasty so I drove to work today after riding my bike M, T, W, and TH. This is the first time I've tried the bike thing and was pretty psyched to do it for the entire week. It's a good thing that storm rolled through when it did or Karen Minton would be getting an earful from me!

Incidentally, my car commute is only 2.5 miles; My bike route takes me through a park and totals 1.9 miles! I try to do some extra laps around the park on my way home each day. Yesterday I was early enough to do a couple on my way IN to work! This bike commute is really appealing to me.

I rode all day to celebrate. First I went to my favorite bike shop and hung out for awhile, then I rode out into the foothills and out of the city limits. Once in the country I saw pastures turning blue with wild camas in bloom, too many dogwood trees in full bloom to count, one fox, sixteen wild turkey, always blacktail deer, one Osprey and two golden eagles. I stopped to visit with a friend who is renovating a country home on 20 acres, gave carrots to the horse, and headed back to town.
I ended my ride at my favorite outdoor fish and chips joint, where the special of the day was smoked wild salmon fish and chips, that's just what I had for a sunny lunch under a blooming wisteria arbor!

I didn't know it was Earth Day, but I did ride my bike on my errand running, even ticking off my bank by riding my bike through the drive-thru ATM. I checked my mail at the PO, paid a my phone and utiliy bills, picked up some prescriptions, stopped for lunch, and dropped in at my LBS to thank the in house wheelsmith for rebuilding my rear wheel. My car only moved when I took my son to school, as I picked him up with my MTB and trailercycle, ticking more people off as I move to the front of the line, ahead of several idling SUVs whose kids were gawking over the trailercycle rather then get into the truck.

I drove my rented car to work so I could return it today - my bike was in the back of it, does that count for anything?

I have an unfair advantage. Inever bus, never drive. I rarely carpool (only to vancouver 2.5 hours away) I walk or tide everywhere. I celebrated the best way I know how, to do things like I always do them

I work a 12 hour night shift, would love to ride the 16 km to work but I'm usually too tired after work and wouldn't feel safe. That's why I take the bus.

Hehe I rode my bike to and from work as usual on Earth Day.

But my day took an unexpected twist when I was riding a trail with a friend in the evening and dislocated my arm


I wasn't hardcore enough to ride to the hospital so my buddy drove me to the hospital to get it fixed.

I work at home, so this isn't an issue normally. However, on Earth Day I had a meeting in the next town over, plus I had to visit the pharmacy, K-Mart, and also rode through the drive-up ATM. It was really neat doing all of those errands on the bike and I plan on making this my regular habit.

stop yourself. every freakin' day should be earth day. i've taught my kids to not waste and to look at wasteful ways differently.
