When you build a bike up, do you normally use a neutral color (black or white), try to match the frame's primary color or go for matching colored accents on the bike?

There are many acceptable colors. Black, for instance. Or, you could choose... say... black. For a change, use Black instead?

I put white on a bike that had white logos. Looked really good too. Got dirty really fast. Like after every ride.

The trouble with matching an accent color on your bike is there's "perfect match" and there's "not exactly". "Not exactly" usually looks like crap.

If you go for the color match or contrast, the problem is that after a few rides, or one long drive, it doesn't match and the contrast goes gray.

How many change colors each time? One of the fun things about tape is at I change up the color every few months. Am I the only one who doesn't like to use the same color tape twice in a row?

White looks awesome, for about one ride, and then it starts looking like crap.

Every few months? Eek.

I think I'm on 2.5 years with my current wrap, thinking about redoing it (in black) before this weekend.

Well, I haven't ridden my Fargo in two seasons and it may have been less often that I changed tape. Probably was once a season though, and early on was more frequent due to my early wraps not holding up well.

When I was building my fixed gear conversion I already owned the red and yellow bar tape and the yellow water bottle cage so I painted the rest of the bike to match. It even has yellow rims now.

I've been using bright orange tape the last few seasons. I started in order to help my teammates find me more easily in a bunch. We had all black kits (like about half the other teams in NorCal), so it was a help to catch the eye.

This season we went with bright orange jerseys (think of the old Euskatel kit) so that solved that problem, but I've kept the orange tape.

There is only one color that doesn't show filth after a few rides, but I can't remember what color that is.
Perhaps somebody will refresh my memory.

I like to follow accent colors, it makes the bike stand out better. Back in the early 80's when everyone was going with frame pumps that matched the primary color it made bikes look awkward, like they had either a fat top tube or two top tubes, I went a different direction and went with a pump that matched my accent color and people liked it because it was different.

For me, it depends on the bike. My main bike is black & white w/ orange accents, black bar tape. My backup bike is all blue with black tape. The third bike in the stable is red with white trim, cables & white tape. Wife's main bike is gray with white tape, pink accents. Her backup bike is blue with yellow lettering so went with yellow tape & cables.
