Used a wet lube on my chain last week...... never again!

What a mess. I used a lube called speedX and while it looked all nice and shiny it wasn't but a few miles later that the lube was flinging off the chain making a mess of everything everywhere. I have gone back to using a paraffin based lube (chain wax) and can't see why anyone would NOT use this type of lubrication. Sand and grit do not stick to the chain and gears, there is no fling off and the drivetrain is smooth and quiet. No, I did not over lube the chain with the speedX.

You did something wrong concerning applying the stuff.

+1. Like not wiping off the excess prior to riding.

DBrown9383 08-23-15 12:03 PM

Ahh but I DID wipe off the excess before riding. Maybe the speedX is just too thin I don't know but I won't use it again. The maxima chain wax is clean, dry and does the job w/o any of the issues that come with using a traditional lube.

trailangel 08-23-15 12:43 PM

What kind of stuff was on the chain before you put the SpeedX on?

Doctor Morbius 08-23-15 12:53 PM

I've used Boeshield on a few chains and even though it's a paraffin based lube, you're supposed to let it dry overnight and wipe the chain down prior to riding the bike.

I had previously been using maxima chain wax. I used several rags and isopropyl alcohol to clean and remove the chain wax before applying the speedX

Grew up around machinery all my life and all i/we used on drive chains was aerosol chain lube when we had it other wise drain oil, some day I will understand why a bike chain is different,

You have to understand the basic principals. If there is any black to be seen on the beautiful gold or silver chain, cogs or chainrings, Almighty God will strike that rider down.

I cannot explain why I still seem to exist.

The wet lube I use (Tri-Flow) contains a solvent to make it thinner when applied.
The solvent needs to evaporate before riding, else it will splatter copiously.
Simple solution is to apply it the day before, then let it sit overnight.

I use epic lube.
Not fancy stuff but it seems to work just fine

No, DBrown9383 didn't do anything wrong. One of the points of wet lube is that it is supposed to flow after any solvent has evaporated unlike wax lubes. If the lube can flow, it is going to end up on the outside of the chain at some point...whether when riding or just on standing.

Just go back to using what you've been using DBrown9383 and don't worry that you are missing out on something. You are missing out on something...having to constantly clean your chain and bike.

Of course phsyco, you are right.

Have been using the hot wax (paraffin) method since the mid-1970s. No fuss, no muss . . .

The best simple choice. But I'd like to point out wet lube isn't the one to choose if you want a low-maintenance chain. That's where you use a wax-based lube like White Lightning Clean Ride. But you still have to let it 'dry'.

I have been useing a wax from Runaway Bike HOT TUB Chain Lubricant. A hot paraffin wax bike chain lube. and one tub has lasted me about 5-6 chains. It last about 350miles in the dry per apply.but isnt as clean as plain parafin as it has some added lubricants. In the wet months i put on a diffrent chain and use rock and roll extreme as parfin wax and rain dont mix.

Don't bother asking the pro teams' mechanics what they use. On the Grand Tours, they wash down the bike after each stage ride. They could care less about most of the issues we raise here.
