It's been a long time since I've used the word "hobby." I always thought of it as something you did for fun. But, curiosity got the better of me, so I looked it up. The online Merriam-Webster Dictionary had only one definition: an old English word for a small Falcon. What!? Nothing else. That can't be it. So, I used "The Google" (I will always thank GW Bush for that phrase). Ah, there it is: something done for fun or enjoyment. Took a few moments to consider. Can smoking a cigar and drinking Bushmill's while sitting on the porch be a hobby? It used to be riding my Ducati all over town and the country. But, these days I don't want to give up that time when I could be cycling. Hmm. Well, I do read a lot and it's primarily about trying to understand life, reality, why we're here, etc. So, a strange mix of philosophy and science. And, I'm always interested in anything I can learn about "life" online. That's when I realized that my "hobby" really boils down to searching to know more about as much as I can. Today I've started by learning that a hobby is a small falcon. Cool. And, thanks.

Auto racing at least once a month and fishing, between those two I can't afford to do anything else.

Used to rock climb and hike/camp, but the place I live now isn't really conducive to either. These days I spin fish and play paid gigs at bars and brew pubs. I play 50/50 original and cover music - I always get the most compliments when I do A-Ha's Take on Me, Pearl Jam's Yellow Ledbetter, James Taylor's Copperline, Jim Croce's Operator and of course MJ's Thriller.

I took a similar approach in my reply to this thread; and I have also posted to BF about my “seeking the answers to life’s persistent questions.” (from ”Guy Noir, Private Eye on NPR’s Prairie Home Companion).

I cycle for (fun) exercise, particularly via commuting, and consider it a lifestyle

I'm sorry. I don't understand. Could you explain please? What is this "outside of cycling" of which you speak?

Along the lines of "I also play hockey a few times a week and there is a definite benefit from cycling", this may be silly, but I work on the eighth floor and NEVER use the elevator. I always take the stairs, and often, as in two or three times a day, get up and go walk the stairs just because I need to move around and not just sit in my cubicle all day long. Seems to me climbing stairs uses the same muscles as cycling, and any exercise is better than none, I figure.

My hobbies used to be more expensive and sedentary before I had kids. For example, I used to race cars and ride motorcycles.

Nowadays, I aim for cost-friendly hobbies that also provide a health benefit. I exercise every day (weights one day, run the other day). And my main hobbies like bicycling and camping include the entire family.

I like to bass fish the NYC reservoirs in Westchester &Putnam counties. No motors rowboats only. I row between 5-10 miles a day when I go.

I grow plants, so biking doesn't help there. However, I also don't bike fully to fulfill some fitness activity, I do it because it's fun, gives me something to work and can sometimes/usually get you someplace as fast as a car. I also work with the NPS to teach people about the ecosystem, but biking doesn't help with that either.

I go backpacking in the mountains in the fall and winter. And skiing, in winter. And climb 14ers when I get the chance.

Cycling helps keep me in shape for when I can get away to the mountains.

I wouldn't consider biking a hobby, more like an OCD sport and transportation. Besides commuting and mt biking, both year round. There is fatbiking year round and bike touring during the summer. I garden some, camp, smoke pork products on the webber, and cook as well. I have amassed a large quantity of bourbon and ryes, sort of a hobby. And lead tastings of said whiskey and beer as well. Active in my mt bike club (NEMBA) doing trail work as well.

I enjoy building with LEGO, mostly space themed items. I work on my car when ever I have the time or money to do so. I used to draw a lot, but not so much anymore.

My other hobby/profession is classical pianist. I don't think cycling has really helped it, but the piano playing has helped cycling in one way. My hands and forearms are so strong that braking has never been a problem. I have at times worried about whether the brake levels/cable/brake shoes could withstand the strain, but so far no problem. I never have any fatigue in my arms.

I'd call restoring vintage bicycles as a hobby or mine. And I'd say my cycling and my hobby are pretty interrelated. I have a couple other completely non-related hobbies as well.
