Sentinel?? Manufacturer of bikes??
Was cruising garage sales today, and saw a green road bike, older, not STI, but little used.
It stated that it was manufactured by "Sentinel Manufacturing Company."
I assumed this was another Huffy variant, but will kick myself if this is some rare and precious machine.
Sorry, I was in a hurry and did not have time to do any more than one quick look.
No, I did not buy it.

Not only is there a good chance it's like a Huffy, there's a good chance it is a Huffy. Not that there's anything wrong with that!

Oh, nevermind, you said it was a road bike

Oh yes, the Sentinal road bike, the illustrious bicycle so sought after by collectors. I have only seen photos of them, but never actually seen one with my own eyes.
You are lucky to have been so close to it! Tell us more about the details. Surely, you noticed the fine workmanship and attention to detail. The components were also top-of-the-line.
How much was it going for - $2,500 or so. They were terribly expensive new, but maybe the owner didn't know the true value and was selling it for less than $4,000 or so.
Wait 'till you show your friends who know bikes! You will be the talk of the gang.

Seriously.........Sentinels were made in the US in the early 1970's and were roughly equivalent to entry-level Japanese road bikes of the time. Bikecology (now Supergo) sold them relabeled as a house brand bike.

My road bike, which I bought cira '74, in Van Neys (I think or anyway about that location) says Sentinel Horizon on it. IIRR it cost $140 or so. It of course is just as Mike described. Anyway it is steel framed double butted and uses Shimno parts 10 soeed of course. I still like it.

I still have my Horizon...
Mine sounds exactly like yours! Dark blue with a handpainted gold stripe around the frame buttings?
I got it at roughly the same time in CT, right after my cool Schwinn was stolen.
I missed the Schwinn, but the Sentinel became part of my body before too long!!
