Yeah, seems like an odd distinction. I ride 6 days a week, usually take off Sunday. Been averaging 200 miles a week over the summer.

Usually 3 days/wk for 100 mi./wk. Here in New England we get to ride from April-Oct on the roads. So, about 2500-3000 mi. (4300-4800 km) a season.

I am car-free and ride 7 days per week. I average about 345 days per year on a bike. My only time off the bike is during holidays and vacation time which adds up to a total of about 20 days per year.

67yo friend has missed 1 day this year due to lightning/rain. He has 12,000+ miles so far and should have 18,000 by 12/31.

I use my grocery grabber as much as possible. Out this morning at 0545 to get groceries at the 24hr Walmart.

When I turned 65 last month I decided to ride at least 65 miles any time I go out on my Giant, which is usually 3 times a week. Yesterday 76, Thursday was 71, Tuesday was 102, last Saturday 71......have only missed one ride on the Giant being 42 miles because of an appointment commitment.

I ride more than that and work 50-60 hours a week.

With 7-8 hours of sleep each night there are 16-17 waking hours a day totaling 112-119 per week.

Subtracting 50-60 hours total spread over 5 work days a week leaves 5-6 hours a day for other things.

It's not a big deal as long as you don't waste too much time on things like commuting and watching TV.

At Uni 3 days/wk avg 30-40m/day
Break, every other day anywhere from 30-80 dep on soreness & heat

I can agree with some that it's like a meditation..if I go any longer than a week without I'll get withdrawals

That's a slightly daft comment, actually. When I was working around 50 hours a week I was averaging something around 10,000 miles, not kilometers, per year. That is only about 12 hours per week on the bike. I commuted around one hour each way, probably four days per week, so that was eight of those hours taken care of.

One year my commute was 29 miles each way. I only did that maybe three days a week on average, but that's still something like 180 miles a week without counting the miles I did at weekends - and there were plenty of those.

When I was racing 55-59 year-old veterans (you call them Masters in the States) I was regarded as being a lazy trainer. Most of the guys who were winning were training a minimum of 250 miles a week. They had jobs, too.

Except for my work commuting rides, I ride to the grocery store 0-1 times a week, and go on a group ride about once a week. It's a social group ride for beginning cyclists, not a group ride for "training". We do stuff like history tours around town, visit farmers market, etc. then finish up with lunch or something. The group rides usually include about an hour's worth of actual riding, with plenty of breaks to check out some landmark, shop in the market, use a restroom, etc.

Agreed. My 11 hours a week is about minimum to be competitive in the M45+.

It gets worse as you get older, as far as I can see. Only the hardest of hard core are still racing at 60, and they weigh less than nothing and have a gazillion miles in their legs. LOL.

Depends how you commute. I commuted by bike 183 days last year for a total of 12,000km. Another 3,000km or so on the weekends. I basically ride for an hour every 12 hrs during the week. I throw in a few intervals now and then and mix up the intensity of my rides and it's decent training.

I don't understand ??. Why wouldn't you count bike commuting as cycling ??. Many people use their commutes as training rides. Commuting is a great way to get your base miles in and maintain your fitness... Majority of my yearly mileage comes from daily commuting rides.

I definitely counted my commutes in my 10,000-ish km.

My commute was 13.6 km/day - 68 km/week ... and I commuted about 42* weeks a year = 2856 km.

I usually tried to ride my commutes as a series of sprints ... sprint to a set of lights, wait at the set of lights, sprint to the next set of lights, etc.

And then I might take a longer route home if I felt like it, or else I would go straight home, grab a bite to eat and head out the door again for the evening.

* I lived in Winnipeg at the time, so there were days when I couldn't commute because of the winter weather + I had 3-4 weeks of holiday/leave time each year.

Normally everyday. Sometimes I'll take a day off when sick, and other times I'll ride on the trainer rather than out on the road.

For me, I have made it a point to ride seven days a week this summer, for therapy. If it's raining, I'll still ride indoors. It's still do-able even when working a long day. But only ten miles per day minimum. This week I have noticed a strong desire to go twelve or thirteen miles a day. By the time I hang the bike up for the winter I'll have a new daily minimum to adhere to.

I do a "non-training, social ride" on most Saturdays. It is extremely enjoyable!

I am a 2000 mile a year cyclist. I ride about 120 times a year. Because I live where we have cold winters I mostly ride between April-October.... with shorter rides November-March.

Yes indeedy.

I'd like to find an organized ride that combines cycling and camping, ideally on a weekend. I also want to do the ride to Purcellville, which is kind of a thing for cyclists in this area - I guess just because it's the end of the WO&D Trail. But I'm holding off until I get a road bike - relaxed geometry of course, for all-day riding.

Usually I get 2-3 rides in each week, mostly to work. I'll probably get close to 1000 cycling miles this year.
