Every road bike has a horizontal, or nearly horizontal, top tube. Even the "women's specific design" models. Mixte models---with a 45 degree or greater downward angled top tube---went out of fashion years ago. Trust me----no one is going to mock or make fun of her for riding that.
Merida in Europe is Specialized in North America. Merida owns a 49% share of Specialized, and makes most of their frames. It's a solid ride. Specialized makes at least two women-specific road bike models: the Ruby and the Dolce. I'm sure that Merida has comparable models across the pond. The shop may have even sold her one. |

+1. By using "sibling" instead of "brother" or "sister" and "their" instead of "his" or "her" the OP appears to have intentionally tried to hide gender to create confusion. In addition, there is nothing that stands out about the bike.
Troll-spotting 101. It's usually not that difficult if you take a few seconds to really think about the phrasing of a post, especially when it is a first post. Question: Why would any serious poster start a thread involving gender-appropriateness and not include any gender information? Answer: To goad people into responding precisely the way nearly all of you responded. |

You make a good point. I don't know. I'm not a native Spanish speaker, and when I made my post I was just thinking about how the letters and the word looked to my eye. I hope my posting wasn't seen as being disrespectful to the residents of Merida or nationals of Spain and Mexico. That was not the intent.

Maybe the problem is baby blue.
Not very manly. Not very womanly. I'd say go for the reds and blacks for the men. And pinks and purples for the women. But then again, baby blue should fit in well with gender neutral. Perhaps the OP's sibling considers themselves gender neutral, and would like a blue and pink bike. A touch of lipstick should help. |

That bike looks perfect for anyone confused about their gender. They could undergo several sex change operations without having to upgrade their bike.

Thats a great looking bike and the gender specific thing is really a thing of the past. I really think the women specific geometry is a scam. Bike fit should be more of a concern than male/female geometry. As far as color goes, that is a personal preferance. Some dudes rockin pink bikes and I even seen a guy in apurple car the other day. Who cares. Ride the bike.

You know the OP is just sitting there laughing at all these posts . . . .
Can we make it to five pages on this thread? |

Back in my day, trolling meant something.

Hi, no trolling, I genuinely want to to keep it not gender specific to alleviate bias in the conversation, and ask how everyone felt. My brother can do as he pleases but thanks to you guys I have an indication of what other people would think of the bike
|
You could tell him to "grow up". :D

OP is a prime example. |
That looks like a bike that any human could ride.

I find it interesting that in the year 2015 people still determine colors to gender oriented.

My cat won't ride the dog's bike....but I'd ride the bike in the OP. Can't tell what gender it is....but people would have no trouble identifying my gender, so I wouldn't worry. And unless one is riding in the company of other cyclists, no one noticers your bike/knows the difference. Ride a Walmart bike or a $13K wonder-bike, and the average joe couldn't tell the difference.

If the sibling is male and thinks the bike is too feminine, or is female and thinks the bike is too masculine-looking, I guess that there's no convincing them otherwise. To cover all bases, I guess there is the case of a subset of either sex that think the bike is not adequate in going the other direction. Same deal - hard to convince them otherwise.
That said, I am a large (6'2", 220#) heterosexual male that played football, and used to ride a lavender Raleigh Competition (the color scheme is shown below). I'd suggest that sibling adopt a more confident attitude and ride the damned bike. I mean, if your sexuality is threatened by a bike color.... http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=475993 |

Also, pink accents on a gray bike would look pretty badass in my book. If I have to ride a black/red bike because I'm a guy, then I'm done with this hobby. |
