Why is it people ask for advice than do the exact opisite

Why is it people ask for advice than do the exact opisite
I have a friend who is wanting to get into riding great but she asked me and several other people how to choose a bike right for her.
So pretty much everyone gave her the answer of what they ride and like again great nothing wrong with getting opinions.
But what we all agreed on is to go to a bike shop and find what size bike you need what will be comfortable to her.
So what does she do she goes online and bought a bike and not even a cheap one but a for a beginner an expensive one.
So now she has a bike coming that she liked the color and has no idea how it will fit her.
And I am certain we can make some adjustments but to me this was just stupid to by a bike when you have no idea what you will like.
So pretty much everyone gave her the answer of what they ride and like again great nothing wrong with getting opinions.
But what we all agreed on is to go to a bike shop and find what size bike you need what will be comfortable to her.

Sometimes you ask a girl out that you don't like and end up marrying her. Sometimes you end up heartbroken. What kind of bike, how much, and how much research did she do? I have a friend that spent 1200$ on a specialized and he has rode it a total of 1 time in 2 years. He went to the LBS and got fitted and everything.

It's the same with every hobby.
Maybe she gets lucky, and the bike fits her perfectly out of the box. Maybe it doesn't fit but a LBS can help her with stem choices until it's workable. Maybe she rides it once and then puts it in the basement.
Except for it being a more expensive lesson, it's no different than if she'd bought a bike off of Craigslist. It's possible that the experiences she gets with her first bike will get her to research bike fit and become a devotee like the rest of you tried to be for her.

He'll trade that for something else, then sell that second piece for a loss to buy a third. The third won't work and about this time he'll go with what I'd suggested in the first place, then call me and chew me out for not telling him to buy that originally (which I had). It happens. Some folks just need to find their own path.

Huh. I can see people asking for advice on a certain bike when in reality they just want validation that their perceived choice is the right one. But in your friend's case, you made it clear how important it is to get the right size bike and she still ignored that advice. Very strange.

People are going to do what they are going to do. I more or less did this with these forums and my current bike. I was between a GT and Fuji and the consensus was to buy the Fuji from my LBS or something online and have the LBS build it. The consensus was also to spend more than my budget.
People always ask me about computer advice, balk when I show them a proper computer, buy one at half the cost, pay 25% of the cost to fix it when a component breaks after 13 months, and then buy another one 24 months after the initial purchase.. Meanwhile, I keep computers that are twice as expensive as their initial computer for 5 years and my total cost of ownership is less and mine don't break.
Your best bet here is damage control. Try to make the purchased bike as comfortable as possible. Get this person into the hobby. If she bought something based on her height, then it can probably be wrenched to provide a good fit.

...sold cars for a while, the women wanted to see if they liked the taillights and the color. That's how a lot of them chose a car/suv and if that's the way they choose then for them it isn't wrong.

A friend asks for advice and is inundated with opinions from "everyone" and then told to go to a bike shop.
Did anyone offer to go with her so she wouldn't be intimidated or sold the wrong bike?
